when u look at a bunch of women wearing Hijab or men with beards and cap, then to most people the first word that comes to their mind will be --OPRESSION. but look at them carefully.
can u tell me among them -- who is rich or from a wealthy class. no they all will look EQUAL. irrespective of men/women, rich/poor, young/old -- they all look equal. this is a way to keep virtues like -- pride and arrogance -- in control and to overcome them. it all comes down to one basic fact --SIMPLICITY.
it is the simplicity of Islam. we muslims beleive that we came empty handed and will leave the world empty handed. Allah has ordered us to live a very simple life and not to hoard any wealth. for on the Day of Judgement, wealth is of no avail but GOOD DEEDS WILL HELP. it is the same reason of simplicity and modesty that women wear Hijab too.
having the beard was the custom of the prophets and some of the customs are obligatory. btw, my husband doesnt have a beard, nor does my father nor my brother.

It's not necessary. it is only recommended to identity yourself as a muslim more than a non-muslim - which means wearing a beard or a cap. a beard is also encouraged because it's a sign of manhood and islam is a philosophy that tries to perfect the life of a person - inside and outside.
We also have to take into consideration what is meant by masculinity or manhood in the present day and society. a stubble and less flamboyant behaviour and clothes may be considered masculine today in the West.
In other words, feminine behaviour is discouraged and masculinity (not barbarism) is encouraged for Muslim men; and vice versa for Muslim women.

What ever Muslims do in the dress, robe, attire, appearance and action, they normally take Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) as their roll model.
Beard: Two hand full down wards, to convey to a person who is at a distance, to identify the person in front of you is a religiously connected person. Mustache should not touch saliva from lips. So they shave it off.
Cap: A "hand made white cotton cap" over the skull gives to the person who is in opposite direction that the person who is there is follower of Prophet Mohammad!
This was actually followed by Prophet Mohammad, for the sake of informing his own people to understand his personal looks, during the "great war of Makha" with the Buddhists!!!
After maintaining all the makeup, dressing etc., if you are not obeying the "FIVE PILLARS of ISLAM" - it makes no sense in having the show business!
So character is the most important aspect compared to ones appearance. A true Muslim always follow Islam at home and Islam at out side his home also. Out side a lot make drama by quoting several lines of verses from the Holy Quoran and at home they do all sorts of damage to Islam by disobeying the teachings!
Who enters in some one's (the champions of Islam) bed room and see how he treat his wife and children?
That is why, Prophet Mohmammad advised his his own kith and kin "to feel the pain of the hunger - then only they can help those who suffer without food - So during Ramadhan & Hajj Muslims donate Rice, Wheat etc to the poor"

In Islam, Men are expected to look and behave like men, the same goes for women. They are both equal but are different, and in acknowledging these differences, men grow a beard, whereas women are encouraged remove hair when it looks 'manly'.
Men also keep a beard, as Prophet Mohammed (pbuh) had one and it is sunnah.

about the beard and cap
we Muslims are not forced to do it
but the ppl who did it
did it because of their love for the messenger "MOHAMED"
and yes, the Muslim person is not forced to wear that dress
because u cant judge a Muslim for his dress and look and beard
u should judge him for his strength of belief in god and holy book and holy messenger
peace

Excellently put man....
Religion is about making people look ugly!!!
No seriously, if you put a Rabi, The pope, a shikh, a hindo, and some other guys together, you get a pretty ugly bunch! can you imagine,if religions had their way, we'd all look like that???~~!!!
Dont forget that religions want you not to think of worldly pleasures but a life of decency and peace, they think that if the people look ugly then we won't have much vice....you catch my drift???

CHALLENGE TO RICK KNOWS:
God does care what you look like. He created you, just the way He wanted, but it is up to us to take care of that creation.
What I mean is, you should eat right, don't abuse your body with additions, clean yourself up and always present yourself with uprightness.
By taking care of your body, you live longer; therefore you can minister longer.
By presenting yourself in a likeable manner, you are a good witness to others.
So, yes He cares what you look like. He cares about every inch of you. "For you are fearfully and wonderfully made." "I knit you together in your mother's womb."
If we abuse our bodies, don't clean up, we are not showing respect to God for His creation.
