A written examination.

An oral interview with members of the Community and the Police Department.

A comprehensive background investigation — includes a voice stress analysis in order to determine truthfulness in the following areas: criminal history, drugs, morality, and honesty.

Psychological testing - written testing and in-person session with Department Psychologist.

An oral interview with the Board of Public Safety.

A conditional offer of employment.

A physical examination (cost shared equally between City and applicant.)

An interview with the Local Police Pension Board.

The above eleven-step process takes approximately six months from the last day applications are accepted.

There are a number of stages to the entry process which begin with your application form. Fill out the form yourself. Fill it out carefully and answer all the sections fully and honestly - this is a very important step in the application process and the quality of your application could determine whether you get an interview or not.

The application forms will be checked and sifted. This means that those without the requisite qualifications or who do not meet the criteria are removed and will not progress further.

If you are successful at the application form stage, you will be contacted and invited to take the Standard Entrance Test . This is an examination which assesses your arithmetic and logical thinking, language ability/comprehension and information handling.

If you are successful in passing the exam, you will be contacted and invited to attend the Force Training and Recruitment Centre, Eaglesham Road, East Kilbride for an initial interview. The initial interview will be scored. Progression to the next stage of the process will be dependent on performance at this interview.

Those candidates selected to move on to the next stage will be contacted and an appointment will be made to visit you at your home to conduct an interview. Your immediate family should be present, as it is important that they are fully aware of what the Cadet Programme entails. The vast majority of the interview will, however, be conducted with the candidate on their own.

If you are successful at the home visit stage, you will be invited to attend a final panel interview at the Force Training and Recruitment Centre. This is a formal interview, conducted by two senior officers.

The final part of the process comes when you are invited to attend a medical examination.

You will be asked to provide details of at least two referees. One of these referees must be from the last school or college you attended. The other can be from any person who knows you well. We will consider what they say about you, your character and the type of person you are. References will also be accepted from any employers that you may have had.

We will also carry out background checks. This means we will be checking our records to ensure that you have not been in trouble with the police. If you have been in trouble, it will not necessarily prevent you getting in to the cadets, but IT IS ESSENTIAL that you declare it on your application form. Should you fail to disclose such information, then almost certainly your application will be rejected.

Police officers, force support officers, or a mixture of the two, may carry out interviews in the various stages of the selection process.

Hi, there will be quite a few questions for your assesment and here are some.
(1) Criminal record history.
(2)A complete background questions on all family members.
(3)Why do you want to become a police officer.
(4) What qualities do you think it takes to be a police officer, and what qualities do you have.
(5)How do you see the role as a police officer.
(6)What would you do in certain situations.
The list can be endless, can I suggest that you go to one of the police recruitment sites or call in to your local police station and ask to speak to an officer (usually a sergeant) who deals with general recruitment,( every station has one) and have a long chat, remember to take a pad with you and take lots of notes, good luck.

There is a book that you maybe able to borrow from the library that covers all these aspects. Though I expect you will be able to find out this information online.

Good luck and brush up on those maths and writing skills before you go. If you feel that you are needing to brush up these skills, you will find free Basic Adult Education classes in your area. Normally you will find a number for them on the library notice board.

Not only do they help people wanting to learn the bascis skills of reading and writing they also provide a service for those with more the advanced skills that have gone a little rusty over the years.
