Like me are you finding it more of a challenge opening some of the products we buy nowadays, supermarkets are the worst culprits.
Now, I accept that food has to be sealed but does it have to be in packets that are almost impossibe to open, and not all have easy opening seals, I would think that the elderly and infirm have more problems than most of us.
It is easy to say just get a knife and cut the seal, but that can be very dangerous as i have found to my cost, and does anyone know if it costs more or, less for this type of sealing

I for one am totally disgusted by it.
A lot of the time it isn't even necessary, especially in the non-food sector. Think of all the waste of energy and raw materials that go into, say packaging 2 picture hooks that cover ca 4 square cm
into plastic and paper covering 80.

I totally agree! I usually end up putting it in another zip lock bag and just cutting the whole top off! Kids can never reseal them and it ends up being thrown in the frig open! So, it's actually double money anyway to have to use a zip lock baggy to keep the food fresh! I'm home alot so luckily I can watch after my kids, but I can imagine theres alot of ruined food out there being thrown in refrigerators that kids can't close. WE definately need to let these manufactures know that by the time it's packaged and distributed, the seals get twisted and compressed and the consumer pays the price in more than one way!

I think that you are talking about the shrink-wrapped products that are air tight with the chic seal? I think that this is the new direction every where. Here in India, we have a lot of items wrapped as such, but the plastic is not as heavy as, say the plastic that wraps a piece of Alaska smoked salmon from your superstore Walmart. I don't think that the cost is any greater -- that they are using a heavier pvc plastic. My concern is that they are so toxic...and food absorbs it. Here in India, a lot of things are wrapped in newspaper or banana leaf --depending on the situation (take away foods, fruits and other items.) Yes the pvc wrapped foods are harder to open. That's why I like to have a pair of utility scissors in my kitchen drawer for the tough items.
Cheers!

I agree, Ive had a right battle to open some items just lately and I always think of the elderly and how difficult they would find it. Maybe everytime we struggle, we should let the manufacturers know so they can review the packaging.

I use scissors on everything! If thing come resealable, I just use a sandwich bag to keep it fresh.
