I'm sure the recipe doesn't call for butter and oil both. I believe it is 1 1/3 cups water and 2 eggs with a half stick of butter. However you can substitute 1/3 cup oil if you wish to.

I am looking at a box (Betty Crocker) - 1 1/4 cup water, 1/3 cup oil-usually veg. oil and 2-3 eggs - I've been making cakes for years and usually they do not use butter anymore.

You can grease the bottom only of the pan with the butter however!

2 eggs, 1/3 cup of oil and 3/4 cup of water. Some cake mixes vary on water and oil by a small amount, but I think this will work.
