my child closed the door on the puppy's left forepaw. How long will it be before the cast has to come off?
I don't have access to a vet.

sheesh. are you guys ever presumptuous and judgmental. The dog was professionally tended to, but I live in a remote area. Vet said I could take the cast off, but I forgot how long she said.
Two hour drive to get to her, and she is away unexpectedly. Don't know when she'll be back. I am trying to look after the little guy, you know hence the question. Sometimes folks who live in remote areas don't have immediate access to services the way most of you seem to .We have to do a lot for ourselves. Of course, I should have a dog and kids. Very closed minded of all of you who think there is only one way to live. People are capable of being trained in the basics of veterinary and human health care, you know.

You need to get access to a vet. You shouldn't be putting a cast on a puppy (which I assume you did what with "no access to a vet"). You could really screw up the dog. If you can't take care of an animal you shouldn't have one.

I wholeheartedly agree with deaddeerny!
If you don't have access to a vet, ring one *nearest* to you and ask them to visit you if possible. A puppy is a very fragile thing when quite young and if the cast is not properly done you could risk permanent damage and pain for the puppy.
...since you asked... when my dog's forepaw broke (my mum accidentally stepped on her paw when she was a wee puppy that bounced around everywhere near ppl's feet), I think it was a few weeks. Depends how young the puppy is.
I hope that puppy's forepaw is alright and as SOON as you can, CONTACT a vet whether in person or on the phone!

I don't know.I hope you will take him to a vet as soon as possible .The little thing must be in pain.My one -year -old kitten Patterson, jumped off of the kitchen counter about 6 weeks ago and he fractured his rear leg.The vet had to sedate him to put a cast on because he was in pain, and he wouldn't walk on it for a week. The cast stayed on for about 25 days, then he started chewing on it and was running around like a normal kitten,so the vet said the cast was ready to come off. So,it was nearly four weeks and his cast was put on by a vet.I'm sure your pup's leg will heal on it's own in time ,but it might always be lame and have chronic pain. Please try and get him to a vet.

did a vet set it? I know you don't want to hear this, but, if not it will probably never heal right. you have to set the bone in the original location, so they grow back together strait. if the bones don't touch, after the break, they will never heal right,, all because your too cheap to spend acouple of bucks on a poor puppy. Ug, what a person. If you can't afford it,, take him to the local humane society, they have vets that will help the puppy for free. Thanks.

did you put the cast on? You could be doing more damage than good, please do not self diagnose, you pet may pay the price for this. If the vet put the cast on, then he/she should have told you how long...

It seems to me the simplest solution would be to phone the vet and ask!
