What do you consider a fortune? What do you want it for? I understand to drink, but to drink on its own, to pair with a meal, to pair with cheese, to serve to guests, etc.

My recent mid-priced favourites are:

Boroli Barolo 2000 ($50)
E Guigal CDP 2001 ($45)
Archery Summit Arcus Estates Pinot Noir 2003 ($75)
Domaine Drouhin "Laurene" 2002 ($60)

These aren't a "fortune" to me and all pair amazingly well with food. The difference between these and any random less expensive wine is amazing.

If those are a "fortune" to you, then here are some everyday table wines that are quite good for the price that you pay:

Six Prong Red
Pepe Sangiovese
Cycles Gladiator Syrah
House Red
Maryhill Reserve Sangiovese
Amberhill Cabernet
Il Bastardo
Chiaramonte
Goose Ridge 2002 Syrah

These are all quite drinkable and not overly complex. Great for sitting around and having a glass or even pairing with a simple meal. Several may benefit from decanting for 15 or 20 minutes, but it's not a necessary step to drink and enjoy them.

Enjoy! : )

The nicest red wine in your whole world is what taste best to you no matter the cost, if you like and enjoy it then buy it by all means. You can use all the so called experts as a mere guide, but you are the ultimate critic for it is you that must drink it.

Go to your local wine store- not a grocery store or huge warehouse type store and ask the nice people who work there to recommend something to you. They'll ask you what you like, describe some of their wines to you and help you select a nice bottle in your price range. Many good wine stores LOVE to help people find a great bottle of wine. It is their passion and the like to share their passion with customers.

Look for Pinotage, a South African wine. I find that despite the brand, Pinotage is always nice.
