Starting on jan. 8, 2007 you will need a passport if you are flying or taking a ship to the u.s. the only exception would be a ferry under 300 miles and with a schedule example toronto to buffalo. starting on jan 1, 2008 you will need a passport to drive across the border or any land crossings.

The US passed a law to permit passage across the Northern and Southern borders with passports only. This is to go into effect January 1, 2007.

I think now you will need a passport along w/ birth certificate.
