If your laptop has a TV out socket then all you need is a composite lead which is a single lead with yellow plugs at the end or it may have an sscart socket which is like a mini scart lead.
You should first check with the laptops documentation that it can dual display, many laptops to only single displays, and then you have to learn how to, in their graphics card settings, split the display.
Most manufacturers web sites have a FAQ site or reasonable support pages which should be of help.
I'm sorry but without knowing the make and model I can't be much more assistance.

First, this is the part that you can't control: checking if your laptop has a VGA output port at the back AND it supports 2nd independant display (most have that ports but half can support 2nd independant display since only as recent as Windows XP that Microsoft caught on and slap dual display as Macs and UNIXes)

To verify that read manual and how to activate 2nd screen in your laptop, if it has 2nd screen capability; if it does not, tough luck, there's no such option as swapping a video card in a laptop.

If so far so good just get the 2nd ordinary screen (tube or LCD your choice); hook it, and enable it according to the manual. That is your second display; TV is another matter altogether, get a tuner (PC card or USB) for that.

I am assuming you are using Win XP; lesser Windows don't have that functionality as far as I know.

if you use a computer monitor rather than a TV and you are using Win XP you simply plug the monitor into the output socket on the rear of your laptop. Make sure you have the right monitor, ie likely only to be VGA output available to you.

You may have to select via settings to enable extended desktop

Most laptops will let you switch output modes it's normally "function" + F5.

there are normally 3 output modes being

- Laptop screen only
- TV/montor/Projector only
- Laptop & TV/montor/Projector
