Ther's a problem with the operating system / Windows software for which reason some programme gets "stuck" and the computer "hangs" in layman's language.

You should press the Control and Alt and Delete keys at the same time (yes three keys together) once, A flag will come up with three options: End Task, Shut Down and Cancel. Click on the Shut Down option. Then another flag will open up telling yu the name of the program that is not responding. Click on "End Task" option in that flag. This will help you shut the computer without having to unplug or put the switch off manually

I think you should take everyone's advice and make a to do list to check all of these things. My own suggestion is to check whether you have Windows Defender installed. The reasons for this suggestion are obscure, but it has to do with Vista specifically having the functionality of UPH Cleaner service, and that sometimes Winodws Defender can hang it up. You can get some great spyware protection from Malwarebytes' product too. So if you have to remove Windows Defender, then you won't be without protection.

You shouldn't unplug it ... If it doesnt shut down with start/shut down then hold the power button in for 10-15 seconds or until it shuts down.

OK just turn it off by the switch on the plug socket then turn the plug socket back on because the computer will not turn back on until you press the on/off button on the base of the computer.
