If you are selling as an individual rather than a trader then I would suspect you might have to pay capital gins tax if there is any major gain over what you paid for it.

You are allowed to make certain gains tax free though

Yes. Private number plates are luxury and not necessity, its like having your own... anything private. You want to be different and distinguished from others, of course yu have to pay for it through taxation. But you will avoid paying the tax if you sell the number plate with the car, in that case you are selling a car that comes with a private number plate rather than trading a distiguished number plate on its own for profit which, as you know, attracts taxation. strictly speaking yes, though so should everyone that sell on ebay or in the back of free newspapers unless you are doing it regularly as a business you can get away with it.
