we have just installed a new shower, tray, tiling, and glass door, looks really nice but last night my husband slipped in it and there is a huge crack in it, more like a hairline crack, do we have to replace the whole tray as it would mean wrecking the tiles and taking the door off or is there any other way to fix it? please Im desperate?

If there is a crack in it, it means that it isn't properly supported underneath. If it is a ceramic tray, it should have a full screed underneath to distribute the stresses evenly. If ceramic and cracked, you will need to replace it as the crack will get worse and water will seap through. Sorry!

If the tray is made from plastic then you can have it repaired.
you can do this your self if you like, go to a Hardware store and get some liquid metal or similar they will tell you at the store what will work best.
etch out the crack, "not to much " just enough for grip and then fill it these fillers harden to a solid so once it sets you should have no problem.

I hope this helps Good Luck.

It sounds as though you will have to replace the whole tray. Manufacturers usually recommend that the tray should be fully supported under the entire base to prevent cracking. You may be able to claim for accidental damage on your house insurance. Check your policy.

Dig out ALL the silicone and any remaining plaster or plastic. dry the gap with a hairdryer or fan heater, BEFORE pressing as much silicone into the gap around the tray. Pack as much silicone in the gaps as you can, DON'T SCRIMP, buy a few tubes, (depending on the size of the gap), and make sure you get the 'mould resistant' type, (marked on the tube). Whilst this will not stop the mould gathering in the shower cubicle, it will NOTimpregnate the silicone and it will be easily cleaned with a brush and soap.

Surely under the shower tray it should be strengthened ,we have just replaced ours with a ceramic one ,ours had a tiny crack appear but it was years old, when we took it out we had to put new levels

Is the shower tray fibreglass or vaccum formed acrylic? If it is fibreglass then it may just be the gel coat that has cracked and in this case a repair is certainly possible.

Raise Cain with the professionals. Either the tray was faulty to begin with, or they didn't put it in right. If they don't, then take the matter up with your insurance company. If you try to fix it yourself, you will invalidate any warranties you might have, plus, it could easily get further broken, which would be your fault.

If a hairline has appeared in the tray then it was not installed correctly. Let me explain..... Whem a tray is delivered to your house it says on the instructiond " THIS TRAY MUST BE BEDDED ON A SLURRY OF WEAK SAND & CEMENT FAILURE TO OBSERVE THIS RULE WILL RESULT IN HAIRLINE CRACKS IN THE TRAY" Need I say more !!!!!!!

i have fitted many shower trays in my time i have never known one crack from someone slipping, was it fitted on a level floor? sorry to say that it should be replaced less expensive than a new ceiling when it leaks

Sorry but yes! Are you insured? If you don`t sort it out then the water will get under the tray and damage the floor/ceiling below.
