It was reported yesterday that the Police Commander in charge of the ant-terrorist squad responsible for the murder of Jean Charles De-Menendes is to be promoted to Deputy Assistant Chief Constable, notwithstanding she was heavily criticised in the report on the incident subsequently.

Is this not an insult: (a) to the family, (b) to the Brazilian Government, (c) to all ethnic minorities living in London, (d) to the people of London per se.

Agree????

Veritas is right - but the majority of the other contributors have not understood. Jean Charles DeMenendes was NOT a terrorist, nor was he "trying to escape". In fact the Police had many opportunities to stop and/or challenge him prior to his entry into the tube station. Even then they failed to stop him and it was only after he actually boared the train was he shot - even WITHOUT any challenge by any Police officer prior to them opening fire on him.

The Commanderof the Anti- Terrist Squad gave the order to fire, so although she wasn't present at the scene she is culpable of murder by being the Senior Officer-in-charge,

Hasn't 90210 ever heard of responsibility, it doesn't matter that she didn't pull the trigger, she was in charge of the operation, its strategy and its tactics. I think that she was a fast tracked graduate, who was previously in charge of diversity. Need I say more? You are right, and there is absolutely no shame. She seems to have been well shielded from criticism, at least so far.

What on earth is 'Phil j' talking about. There is no evidence that De-Menendes ever consorted with terrorists. Some of your other respondents also, don't seem to understand the concept of responsibility.

Why would the commander getting a promotion be an insult to the family?

The officers acted within their duties in a time of crisis, and no criminal charges have been filed.

Maybe if De-menendes hadn't been consorting with terrorist and running out of terrorist safe house from police then you wouldn't be asking this question.

This is not a case of De-menendes being an ethnic minority, its about him being in league with terrorists and not acting within the law of the country that he was living in.

i don't think he has anyone to blame but himself, mainly because had he not been killed maybe he would have committed acts of terrorism or assisted in such acts. There is no way that he is as innocent as the press and family are making him out to be. This whole matter has been a headline maker for the media, and an excuse to hang the police out to dry AGAIN!!!!!

The UK police do exceptionally hard work without the press making things harder. If only the average person knew what the police and security services knew about De-menendes and his actions, then they wouldn't be putting him on a pedestal and treating him as a martyr.

Yes. But incompetence was never an obstacle to promotion in public service. Advancement through the heirarchy of public life is far more to do with which friends you make and who's back you cover than it is to do with being good at the job; in fact at the top levels that IS the job. It was ever thus and ever will be.

why O why do we always have to bend to the so called minorities! why should the family have a say in British business.
Do they pay tax or have a right to vote in the UK?
People also forget that DeMenzies was an illegal immigrant with no right to be legally within the UK at a time when the UK was under a severe and deadly attack by muslim extremists on the underground and transport network.
why don't you try and stop the Argentines or Brazilians from going about their business and see what reply these nations give you

Once upon a time so the story goes the 'officer in charge' of a police operation took responsibility for the outcome....good or bad.The police now take their example from our politicians and are responsible only when it's been a success.

Remember she is not the one that had an itchy trigger finger that day, you have only heard about 1 mistake that happened under her command there has never been any reports about all the good stuff she has done the news papers are only giving one side of the story looking for a public reaction.
the news paper have the power to make you hate who ever they want just because its in black and white don't believe it.

It is highly unlikely that Saddam Hussein personally and individually massacred all those for whom he stands accused.

It is more than likely that he gave the orders to do so.

Whether she actually pulled the trigger seven times is irrelevant to the question.

The issue is whether the order she gave was legal and how far up the chain responsibility goes before the buck stops.

Her promotion was probably in the pipe-line before that incident. She did not pull the trigger. If you made a mistake in your job,it probably wouldn't matter too much, when a police person does it,it can have devastating consequences, but a mistake is just that,a mistake,we all make them.please try not to be too judgemental.

No I dont agree ! I dont think the two incidents are related so why should it be an insult to any one. My sympathies go out to any family who have lost a loved one but their son put himself in the situation at a time when tensions were running extremely high. Why the hell did he put himself in that situation, just because his visa had run out , he didnt have to jump gates to get un -noticed, it was just the opposite.

Did you get your "facts" from the press ? If so then I wouldn't count on them being accurate. The press only tells what makes them look good. Besides when did you last see any story about something positive ?
