Go to your local City Council meeting, I do. You will find that the Republicans will fight til death to protect there own business interests in your town. If there is a dime to be had from the tax payers they want it to go into there business's. You will also see that the Democrats will also fight to protect the working class. You will see them same in any State Legislature and the in the Federal Congress. Government is no longer about what is good for America, it's about what is good for the wealthy and the business owners. BTW our Republican Mayor makes $75,000 per year and he was very wealthy before he was elected. He has a staff that does his work. He spends most of his time doing yard work at home. Our town is about 40,000, very small. The Mayor has a human resource director, a safety service director,a downtown manager and a personal secretary.
All paid by the tax payers. We also own a $2 million dollar Airport that no tax payers use except the business owners Hobby planes and jets. While water, trash and sewer charges by the city have went up four times in 6 years under Republicans who control the City. You say we complain and are not doing anything, I say we are, we are going to fire the Republicans.

The community spirit is still out there. The problem seems to be nobody these day's has time to find it. I would suggest more people walk to the shops, stop and talk to your neighbours, and take an interest in local issues. If you have children, try and teach them the value of belonging to a community, and that it is important to respect other peoples lives and property. You never know, a few years from now, community spirit may be the"in thing"

Here in the USA we're also suffering from the same thing:"An overdose of freedom" without the accompanying sense of "personal responsibility" to the greater community we live in.
I don't know where we (or the western world) are going to wind up if we continue down this road. As a child growing up in NYC, in the 50s, I lived in an ethnically mixed neighborhood where civility ruled. Any adult in that community could tell my parents of any misbehavior on my part, or a teacher would write home about my misdeed and I WAS IN BIG TIME TROUBLE. But that's gone now. And it looks like we're going to pay for everyone going their own way. If we lose to the terrorist of this age we can partly blame our lack of community spirit.

People have become more selfish & also more afraid. Modern housing estates don't foster community spirit & often young people have to live far away from their family & the friends they grew up with. Yob culture is also a major factor; people are afraid. We have also taken 'political correcntness' too far; people are afraid to speak out for fear of offending someone. Young people are not learning what it is to be part of a community; they spend too much time on their own, watching TV, playing computer games & texting, rather than having face to face interaction with other people.

when you realise that technology is quickly replacing our physical gathering you will have your answer.

we use internet to mail; we use cell phone to talk; and we use television (various media) to babysit.

With all these self imposed, life consuming gadgets we don't leave much time to do anything else. Ever been to a movie theater and see someone with a cell phone stuck to their ear for great lengths of time? Is text messaging or checking for messages that urgent that you cannot go more than 5 minutes without looking at your phone? Sit back, watch the movie. Your life shouldn't revolve around a phone. Suddenly everyone thinks they're Dr. Feelgood and have to constantly check for messages.

Also, there's no use in complaining if you will not or cannot do anything about it.

No. It isn't dead. My husband went out and challenged 4 young lads who were breaking up the closed pub next door. He chatted with them, they gave him lip, he suggested they channel their energy into better activities like the Lions, Cadets etc. The message got through that their behaviour wasn't going to be accepted around here. That no one was prepared to put up with our area looking like a dump. They moved off to the park and twisted the swings up and over the bars in frustration. After about 1/3 an hour they undid the swings and sat their as good as gold. Maybe he did some good, at the very least he put out a message that there are people who are prepared to take a stand.

We are both heavily involved with the Lions and carry out charity events for the local community. Everything we buy from the Lions provides money for administration and costs. The money we raise is TOTALLY given back to the community by way of a yearly community fair. Special cases are brought to our attention when there is no other hope for them such as a padded room needed for safe play by a child with a condition that was life threatening. Payment of heating oil for a year for a woman widowed and alone who could not afford it and would have frozen through the winter. Painting rooms for people unable to find money, time or relatives able to help. Supporting and donating to local charites and supporting local schools with gifts of cash to help projects etc. We collect money each year by taking a Sleigh around the streets for days and days just so the local children can sit next to Santa and tell him their wishes. We also get multi-cultural involvement this way with all ethnic groups enjoying a sit down with Santa. We also belong to a group dedicated to saving a local landmark as well as a group dedicated to creating a better town and making it more 'green'. These groups aren't interactive but they ALL focus on community. Without the people like-minded as us, these groups would not exist. So I think you are probably just not meeting the other people who think like you! Get in contact with your local radio, newspaper or community centre and Library and ASK what groups exist. You sound like you are just itching to make a difference.....good for you! But it is no good sitting there wishing...you have to get out there and either join or start a group!! :-D

P.S. All of you who are answering in the negative.......I ask this question: What is stopping YOU from making a difference, why aren't you on here saying it hasn't died? I'm no different than you, except I decided to get up and do something and to get involved in my community. Don't hide behind the old "it's no good no one listens" if that is the case where you are then SHOUT!! I am not rich, I have little experience in life but I do make a difference in peoples lives because I choose to!!!
