I am sure both sexes are guilty of not telling the truth on how many sleeping partners they have slept with. Usually women are guilty of withholding information and guys brag about sexual conquests they have not had. LOL

Most guys who ask that are looking for a specific answer to rate her past and hopefully get the number 'zero' or 1. If she gives more than that as an answer he loses himself in contrived imagery. If he wants to go there.
I think women might ask a man if he's had sex before but dont ask for a number. Funny how women worry more about a man's emotional connection to past lover/s and men worry about her sexual experiences with a past lover/s?

I am sure alot of the time they don't share the exact amount maybe out of fear that they will be seen differently. In our society, women are looked down upon no matter what is said. If a man sleeps with 500 women its ok, if a woman did the same... she would be considered a slut. I think it should'nt matter to a certain extent.
