It is an acronym: the words were "Iesvs Nazarenvs Rex Ivdaeorvm." Latin uses "I" instead of the English "J", and "V" instead of "U" (i.e., Jesus Nazarenus Rex Judaeorum). The English translation is "Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews."

You can find it in most churches, but it is not usually on graves unless someone has put the words on a cross on the grave. I don't think many people would consider themselves to be Jesus of Nazareth.

The Early Church adopted the first letters of each word of this inscription "INRI" as a symbol. Throughout the centuries INRI has appeared in many paintings of the crucifixion.

By the way, Pilate's title for Christ was actually written in three languages.

INRI is an abbreviation of the Latin phrase IESVS NAZARENVS REX IVDAEORVM, which translates to English as: "Jesus the Nazarene, the King of the Jews". It appears in the New Testament of the Christian Bible in the Gospels of Matthew (27:37).

INRI stood for "Jesus of Nazareth King of the Jews" (Not an acronym....simply initials in Latin)

This has been the sign placed above Jesus on the cross. Its part of the crucifixion story where Pilate ordered a sign nailed to the cross saying that.
