I've had Agent Sushi for almost a week - he comes from a big family of cats and dogs and birds. I only have him. At night, he howls and cries all night. He stays hidden most of the time and won't let me touch him. He's eating and eliminating ok (without watchful eyes), and will play with string, but the minute he gets close to me he runs away. Any advice?

Be patient. My kitty came from only his close family (mother and litter-sister) but he hid for three whole days, without taking any food (just water), and when he came out, he would be calling out for his sister and mother a lot. Playing with string is good, eating is good; I think with patience and love he will come around. He would run away if I approached him too, for weeks after that, especially if I came into a room. But as he hid under the bed, it turned out to be easy to stay calm on the bed for a bit, then slowly show my head and hand (not getting off the bed, just peeking down); when he got used to that, I would slowly stretch my arm and pet him a little - key is, no loud noises and no sharp movements.

When he got the idea that I will not harm him, nor grab him, nor anything like that, but will give him food and caress him, he slowly started going out. Now he is wonderful :))

Give him time, and take the strings away so it don't play with strings while you are not watching, they chew and swallow the string and will get caught up in the intestines and die, or choke to death. get toys that you can play with it, sometimes a little kitty ball or even a would up piece of paper and toss it and eventually it will fetch it for you. Kitty is just scared and still in a strange place to him. Give him time. Give him a chance to sleep with you. Awaking you at night will stop. make sure it is not totally dark in the house, this can make matters worse. have a night light or a fw of them and even leave some kind of real light on, a low watt bulb. Call Agent Sushi when you feed it, eventually, and it shouldn't take long, will come to love you and only you. he is a shy cat. This is a one owner cat. You will havea great friend in a very short time. When Mr. Sushi hides, let him be, as long as you know he is safe. All will work out. hey, I really like that name. That is unusal and really cool. My Husband likes it too. From USA, P. S. don't let Mr. Sushi get outside, you will never see him again.

My cat did the same thing. It took about three weeks to get him out from under the bed and socialising. Now he's a lap cat. I put a stuffed cat under the bed with him, with the alarm clock and played with different toys around the bed. I alsoput toys under the bed for him to play with. Try to keep loud banging sounds down, cause this scares him. Since he was use to birds, maybe getting some nature cd's would help relax him some.Familiar sounds. Just be patient and let him explore the house on his own and you go about your regular daily routine. He will come out and get to know you. After a few weeks if he doesn't try to join him under the bed. Then bring him out and pet him on top of the bed.

Be patient and very kind. Try and sleep with him close if possible. He sounds scared and afraid. He probably misses the other animals. Be very loving and soothing. Talk to him with a soothing voice and keep loud noises to a minimum. Think of how you would feel in a new place around no one you knew and were taken away from his mother. He's probably a bit heartbroken. He'll come around.

I had a cat like this when and when she eventually trusted me, she was one of the sweetest pets I ever had.

Sushi is an adorable name, by the way.

pull out the toys!

Our kitty was scared too when we first got him... but kittens are curious. I found this one toy that has feathers attached and a little bell on it and I would wiggle it right where he was hiding. In a few minutes he was jumping and playing. It takes them a bit to get used to being in a new home.
Give him a little time to come around. Also you can try always having kitty treats on you so when he does come to you, you'll have something for him.

Hes lonely.. But you knew this..
Can you go to where u got him .. ask for , or leave a cloth or something with them.. you need to get the scent on something you can bring home and put it in his bed..
Also try catnip in the bed too.. and a pocket warmer under the bedding to make him more comfortable..
You need to make the effort here to win him over.. Cat nip will also help with the playing with toys bit and he will soon get into it.
It sounds like this cat came from a Feral family hes certainly getting on like it.
or Get another cat to keep him company. !

Poor kitty, he misses his mother and family. I would hold him snug, pet him, give him kisses, before letting him go. Put him under the covers with you and pet him. Does he purr? Give him a few treats every day. Keep holding him and petting and kissing him for a few minutes at a time , several times a day, every day. My cat doesn't like to be held, but I give her "lap lessons", keep her on my lap for a few minutes, before letting her go. She is 13 years old. I put her under the covers with me for a few minutes and talk to her. She knows she will be let go, so she is fine. Sometimes when I let her go, she doesn't go too far anyway.
Give your kitten lots a attention and he will be fine

Your kitten is probarly crying for attention! But if he is running away from you, then maybe he is abit scared! pull out some toys, spend more time with your kitten! Give him treats such as abit of whipped cream! He will learn there is nothing to be scared of!

Patience my dear, he came from a home where there were other animals and now there aren't any. He misses that. Get a wind up clock and wrap it in a towel maybe he will cuddle up to it. In time he will begin to identify you as the person who brings him food and he will warm up to you.
