or similar lines. Is it part of their belief that they are disturbing the peace of the death prophets mentioned by chance in their discourse and would like to amend it with that phrase?

I think the Muslims are in the best position to answer it. However, may wish to share their views.

This is an excellent question. One reason we say this is because God and His Angel do so as well. We say a greater phrase for the Prophet Muhammad in Arabic which is "May the Peace and Blessings of God and Greetings be upon him" (Sullallaho Alahi Wasallum). This is because we believe the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is able to receive greeting from his followers even now in his grave. Angels have been appointed to transmit the greeting of a Muslim to their leader Muhammad (pbuh) and the Prophet said whoever sends greetings upon him, i will return there greetings with words of peace. We also receive blessings and rewards from God for doing so.

We also send peace and blessings upon all of the Prophets of God and the Holy people of God (like the Companions of the Prophets, their mothers and wives and the Holy Saints of God) because we believe the receive them in the spiritual world.

Basically it is to regard them in the highest level as they are elevated above of a humanity and on the Day of Judgment, they will be the leaders of nations of people. So we give them the recognition and respect they have earned and deserve.

Thank you for this question.

This phrase and others like it (like "May God be pleased with him/her) is a way of honoring the person mentioned. It is like when people say "God rest his (or her) soul" when they speak of a relative or friend who has passed away.

In Islam, as in other religions, we honor the prophets and pray for their peace and blessings for we know that God has put them in exalted positions. We want to be in accord with the will of God and therefore respect them for the position they were given. These phrases are a way of acknowledging those positions and manifesting our respect and deep regard for these people and their families.

Peace and Blessings,

Salim

Actually the whole phrase in arabic would be " Salatu'LLAHi Wa Salamuhu Alayhi" Litterally the blessing and peace of God up on him.
It's a pryar for the blessing of God up on them and a reminder that they deserve our pryars for bearing the burden of delivering their respective messages.

when muslims say -- peace be upon them, they do it out of respect for them. PROPHETS were men of faith. they were BROTHERS OF A FAITH. and they were sent by Allah for the whole of mankind.

we respect them and remember them because, they are role models for us. they were selfless and were not self-centered. they spent their lives in spreading the word of God. it is for this act of selflessness and righteousness, that Allah orders every muslim to pray for them, so that they will pray for us and with us on the Day of Resurrection and Day of Judgement.

we pray to God to bless the prophets with His mercy. and we muslims do it even when we greet someone -- assalam alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatahu -- may the peace and blessings of Allah be with u. it is a must in Islam that -- a beleiver is he who desires for his brother what he desires for himself.

EDIT:PBUT -- it is "peace and blessings of God be upon them", not man's.
