I myself am TERRIFIED of spiders! its about 4 a.m in NYC and I saw one crawling on the wall while I was listening to some music and I flipped out, I woke up everyone in my house (not cool) and No I can't shake the feeling that there are more. I'm too nervous to go to sleep and I can't for the life of me figure out why people are afraid of spiders. I mean the ones that we have are relativley small and they just hand around, literally. But I am so scared of them, for me personally its all the legs, anything with more than 2 legs thats not a cat or a dog, freaks me out. Is that a reason some of my aracnaphobic out there ahte spiders? Is there an official reason? All opinions are welcome!

Many people fear things like snakes and spiders because they are taught to either by family members or by the culture in general. Our culture is one that regards spiders as creepy and dangerous. You might feel the same way about dogs or birds if the culture taught you that. My wife is terrified of spiders too, and she just tries to remember that they eat insects for us and pretty much stay away from us. They are more afraid of us than we are of them.

They are creepy crawly and they can bite. I hate spiders, too and really freak when they get close to me. They can drop on you from the ceiling. I get goose bumps talking about them. Uugghhhh!!!! I don't know why either, except they are crawly things that show up without warning and seems to stare at you. They see you coming at them. Some of them turn and watch you when you move around. I live in Alaska and they don't get really big here, but they are big enough.

Social awareness.

If a dozen or so people you grow up with/know are terrified of spiders the awareness will pass onto you, even if there's little logic to it in countries that do not suffer the wrath of poisonous soiders.

The only people I have ever met who have been frightened by spiders wear combat jackets with the word 'MARINES' on them. I guess you are in the USMC.

Spiders are creepy. They also signify a trapped feeling. Like a web. Mabey- subconciously- you feel trapped somehow?

I'm TERRIFIED of spiders, i guess what makes people scared is how weird looking they are, i mean, seeing something that has eight legs, large (most of the time), has gross looking pincers, is hairy....omg just talking about it makes me shiver! lol

Because spiders are creepy crawly, and most people believed that they could poison you when you got bitten by one....

well they are ugly, and their mouth is on the bottom, and they can be poison, well a rare few are. take some bug spray to the room then take a hot shower, that should help.

they are creepy, crawly and can bite...causing serious injuries including death..... they can also leave a person deformed as the brown recluse destroys the skin around where it bit and tissue may have to be removed to stop its effects......leaving scarring...
