If they think you are going to harm yourself or others, they are under an obligation to help you....even if it means telling family members. If you need help and do not trust the school counselor, there are other people you can talk to. Look in the phonebook for hotlines and they might can direct you to another free counselor. I am a nurse practitioner and will help you the best I can if you need to talk. Just let me know.

If a counselor finds you are thinking about/or actually are hurting yourself or someone else, or are being abused in anyway...then yes they are allowed to tell someone else. Actually, it is considered their responsbility and they could get in trouble if someone found they didn't tell.
But I can't imagine a school where they would 'kick you out' for having a problem. You might be put into a mental institution for some time and be expected to keep up your studies, and then return to school at some later time. As far as I know, this is the worst case scenario. I could understand you not wanting that. I didn't.
If you're under 18, which you probably are, your parents will probably be informed if anyone at school (teacher, counselor, principal, etc) that you are hurting yourself. Unless someone thinks you're at serious risk for suicide (as was my case) your parents will have a lot of say in what happens to you.
Unless your school is completely different from most schools (I'm supposing you are American) I know, this is how things will most likely turn out if someone at school finds out you cut yourself.
I can't give you a lot of advice on whether or not to tell someone, because if I could go back I would have never told anybody. But, then you might be lucky enough to experience something completely different than what I did.
PS
Seriously, if you ever want to talk to anyone about this, I'm willing to listen. I certainly haven't gotten my life in order yet, but I tend to be one of those people who never takes their own advice.

School counselors can tell school officials (like the principal) or your parents if you are a danger to yourself or others. If you are cutting, I suggest you talk to them about it because they will get you help. But I've NEVER heard of someone getting kicked out of school for being depressed or suicidal.

If they think anyone in in danger or being harmed (even if your doing it to yourself) yes they can say something ...I have never heard of a scholl kicking someone out for it unless you have the weapon you use at school..
I am still a cutter but I was alot worse when I was young upon finding out they made me talk to a school councler and admirator and my parents where notified and they brought me to the hospital for a phyc councle... The school did this about 10 times...Never got commited though...Then when at a diffrent school I did a parper for english on it and Teacher sent me to make sure I was ok my parents where not notified however my essay was in the school paper with all of my personal experinces taken out of course...If you need someone to talk to i recomend a best friend or a family member who will not say anything if your worried about your parents finding out..i recomend talking to your parents though They can get you help otherwise it will take years to control or stop "if" you can...Cutting can ruin alot of relationships you have in your life..they did in mine...so be careful..

yes they are required to inform someone if you are planning on hurting yourself or others. but you never know, your counselor could try and help instead of automatically telling the administration. as the person above said, i would suggest calling a hotline. completely confidential, and usually the people have some experience in what you are feeling. good luck!
below is a link to a site where it gives you specific numbers to call for your state. i really suggest you take advantage of them, it always helps to talk things out

The role of school counselors are to help and advise students. They will however report and do whatever is best for the benefit of the school first...not the single student. Seek help for your disorder, but be very careful with the counselors at school.

YES..that is a self destructive behavior and they are by law mandated to report this self abuse in order to help you receive adequate mental health...i know that cutting helps dull the pain in your heart but it will ultimately just leave ugly scars that you will carry through the rest of your life....may sound stupid to you now but perhaps you can try getting your emotions out in poetry, art, or dear god letters..( i used to write to dear no one cuz i thought god was a joke back then, )still the same concept and helps vent some of the hurt and frustration the world heaps upon us daily

I would not trust a school counselor not to tell. I know they have to report to the authorities if they consider you a danger to yourself. Some of them may be very caring people, but they are working for the school district, not you.

First of all, you don't need to cut yourself, so you do need to seek help for that. I don't believe they will kick you out, they should give you help and counseling. Somethings though I believe they may be required to tell a higher authority, so that they can provide help. Just don't cut yourself, please. That is never a good thing to do, no matter what you are going through. Always get help if you feel like harming you or anything else. I really do hope that I have helped you. I don't know you, but I don't want you to hurt yourself. Pray about it. That always works.

counselors are allowed to report when they feel it will be a harm to you or to students and faculty. why do you like cutting yourself i think we went through this yesterday. you will mess up your skin like that just think you will get keloids and that is ugly. is it some kind of fun or joy you get? i know it is not suicidal, but it is not good either it is still a cry for attention and help. even wanting to tell the counselor you are seeking help. best of luck to you i hope you realize how beautiful you are and not want to jeopardize your life like that well your skin like that if you can pin point what started you to cutting yourself maybe that will be a start for you
