Islam was the attraction that the thinking people developed towards an ideal free from superstition upholding the worship of the ‘One and Only God’, the Creator and the pursuit of His messengers. It was only natural for those thinking people to be drawn to the practice of a faith that sought the path of ‘surrender to God’, at a time when their perceptions were fogged by false deities, and their agents who posed as priests. The ideal of ‘One God, one humanity’, simultaneously put forth by Islam, uproots the parochial beliefs put up in the name of ones birth. The access to the message of ‘one humanity’ experienced by those who were being oppressed in the name of religion and caste, further led to the propagation of Islam. The selfless and sincere lives led by Muslims who migrated different parts of the world for business purposes and the like, also drew the people of those countries to Islam

You need to be broad minded, patient and neutral to accept different answers which may be for or against it according to the answerer. However, if you read the two texts of Islam (which are the Quran and Sonna "sayings and conducts of Mohammad") and freed your mind from any other control except the mind, you would discover what Islam is. However, the name is so attractive and beguiling. It is some sort of pun. It means peace when Muslims are weak and it means surrender to them if they are strong. It is derived from the Arabic verb "sa'l'la'ma" which means surrender, submit, give in in peace, or deliver. While the verb "as-la-ma" (with the first syllable stressed and double 's')which lexically means "to surrender/submit/give up", it also means "to convert to the religion Islam". Now, in my opinion, to believe in Islam is to give up your mind and blindly obey the god, Mohammad and the Khalifs. If you don't believe in it, either you have to pay all your money, or you have to be killed or the two choices can be postoponed for the sake of avoiding (seeking "takky'ya/avoidance of") any bad effects on Islam as a result of its bad conduct. (No Islam without "Takky'ya"), a very important and basic role of the religion. It means: If Moslims are weak in a society, they have to be temporarily on good terms with the others to avoid any harm to themselves or to the religion. Once they get strong in a society, they have to change and convert this society into Islam, even if they have to kill or murder all its individuals who might oppose or might not believe in it.

The literal meaning of Islam is peace; surrender of one’s will i.e. losing oneself for the sake of God and surrendering one’s own pleasure for the pleasure of God. The message of Islam was revealed to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings on him) 1, 400 years ago. It was revealed through angel Gabriel (on whom be peace) and was thus preserved in the Holy Quran. The Holy Quran carries a Divine guarantee of safeguard from interpolation and it claims that it combines the best features of the earlier scriptures.

The Arabic word ‘ Islam’ stands for ‘Submission’ or ‘Peace’. In a religious context, it implies the peace that reaches out to one when one completely submits oneself to the will of Almighty God. This is achieved only when the individual acts in accordance with the direction of his Creator in all spheres of life.

Islam is an arabic word that is derived from "Salaam -- peace and blessings". when u translate Islam from arabic to english it means -- 'peace, obedience and submission to ONE GOD.'
u need to be obedient to God to submit ur will in front of God's will and when u walk in the path of God it automatically brings peace in ur lives and lives of those around u.

it is a lot like judaism and christianity except the name of god has been changed to Allah. otherwise, pretty much the same thing.
they all stem from the roots of Abraham who was one of the first to talk to that particular God.
