This is a pretty precious video tape, so I really want to fix it. It seems like maybe the reels are stuck or something. It was stopped half-way through the tape the last time it was played (some time ago). When I try to rewind it, my player goes immediately back to STOP mode. When I try to play it, the tape ejects. I've tried it on two different players with the same result.

Is it possible to take the tape out of this cassette & put it into a different one, or would that even help? Are there any other things I could try?

I'm pretty handy, and my instinct is to just take it apart & see what I can do, but before I might screw something up I'd sure appreciate any help or suggestions from folks who know!

Thanks for reading, and for helping if you can...

This is fairly easy to fix.

The fault is that the tape is too tight - or jammed. And the mechanism thinks it at the end of the reel.

VERY easy to take appart - just remember the correct route & all of the guide rollers.
To check the condition of the tape - there is a small square 'button' at one side of the front protective flap - push it in & lift the flap.

If you don't fancy taking it apart just yet - you can try to manually wind it: Get a thin pen & push in the small circular flap on the back/bottom (non-label side) this frees up the lock. Then use a biro (lid on) - gently 'jam' it into the white drive wheel at turn. If it turns freely - pop it back in you machine (make sure there is NO excess slack). If it's really stiff - time to take it apart.

I hopr this is not the case but I lost 200+ tapes (over 600 movies)to mold (fungus) and they reacted in a similar manner. They would play to the point that the mold had stuck the tape together and then would rewind. The bad news is that the tape will pass on the fungus to other tapes and on and on. I talked to all the major VHS tape manufacters and while they had many possible cures none worked. Inspect the the tape and if there is any white/blue spots then you have fungus. The trash guys thought they hit the VHS jackpot before I told them that the tapes were NG.
