A.M. Ante Meridian - Before the Meridian.
P.M. Post Meridan - After the Meridian.
The meridian referred to here is the imaginary longitudinal line, drawn from North to South thru Greenwich England, on Earth maps and globes. It is a geographical reference and is used as temporal (time) reference. The other name for the Greenwich Meridian is known more commonly as the Prime Meridian. The Prime Meridian has a general designation of 0 (zero) degrees longitude. It is to longitude what the imaginary line called the Equatoris to latitude. The Equator is at 0 (zero) degrees latitude.
These designatons provide a system for coordinate mapping location & time reference.
Notice that maps & globes are divided in degrees, minutes, & seconds.

The abbreviation "a.m." stands for ante-meridiem (before the Sun has crossed the line) and pm for post-meridiem (after the Sun has crossed the line).
