He set on a Voyage to discover India and ended up in a group of Islands on the eastern coast of America.
He kept calling it India. Today it is called the West Indies.

Well, the continent was discoverd by Amerigo Vespucci, but the american indians were named and discored by Christofer Columbus, because he was searching for an alternative route to India based on the ideea that the world was round. When he did find America, he thought it was India.
