Well, you are right basically. But while it is easy for Canadians and Mexicans, for example, to refer to themselves as such, Americans don't really have a nice, short alternative. The United States of Americans? A little long.

I'm Canadian and I'm cool with Americans calling themselves that.

America is a great land mass composed of two great divisions or continents, North America and South America. There are many countries that make up North and South America. If you were born in Canada, you say I'm Canadian, not American. If you were born in Brazil,
you say I'm Brazilian, not American. The word America is often used to mean the United States of America. That is why we call ourselves Americans.

This is a common ignorance among latin americans. They teach you people for some stupid reason that we are not Americans because the continent is called America and so we can't claim that name. It is geographically incorrect and insipid.

America is a continent as well as a country.

The country is called the United States of America. That is the country's name, not it's geograpical description.

People who are citizens of the United States of America are called Americans.

America is a country located in the subcontinent called North America.

Also in North America are Canada and Mexico, also called the United States of Mexico.

People who live in the United States of Mexico are called Mexicans. They are also North Americans by continent.

People who are citizens of the United States of America are double Americans because we are both citizens of the country and the continent.

You are a continental American.

Look at a map.

You're right. It's abusive, inconsiderate and arrogant to restrict the name to the citizens of ONE North American republic. But this is another (old)story and what's the point now?

Mimiludgren, you sound like a very offensive, uneducated suburban housewifey,I'm sure the granny you're quoting was a great woman, but the analogy was uncalled for..Feel free to report me
gndnnoviz::Ok,let alone the ethmology of the name, you are a smart lady, please don't insult her intelligence..It's not about basic geography. If I say Las Americas what are you thinking of?It's not just "the continents"Thank you

it relatively is by using fact the u . s . is a rustic called the USA of a, and you could the two call your self a US citizen, or an American, by using fact it relatively is area of the call of your united states of america. there is not any different united states of america on the North or South u.s. continent that has the notice u.s. in its call. So Mexico is Mexican, Canada is Canadian, Peru is Peruvian...get the waft?

you can call yourself a Mexican American that is find, but your questions is phrased wrong, Americans in the USA want to be Americans of the USA nothing more, we don't go around claiming any other north American country to be part of us because they are not, that is why we have our laws against them coming here illegally.

We are the UNITED STATS OF AMERICA nothing more then that, Mexico is Mexico, Canada is Canada and so forth. they claim to call themselves other things but Americans that is why America (USA) took on the name and hold it.

i hope this helps

Citizens of the United States are known, through out the world as "Americans". It evolved. mexicans are known as mexicans. And so it goes.

If you consider yourself an "American" and you are a mexican, you are reaching pretty hard. No matter what you call yourself, unless you are a legal American....then

you are something else....

My great-grandmother used to say a mule all dressed up with silver stirrups and a fine saddle was not a horse...but still a mule. Dress it all you want. An American is an American....and the rest are not.

That is correct in that there is North America, Central America, and South America. However, out of all of the countries in all three areas, most go by the name of their country, ie: Brazilian, Mexican, Canadian, Peruvian, and so on... what are the citizens of the United States of America called? USAian's ummm, no... it has just been shortened to Americans. So although you are correct by definition, in actual usage you are wrong. IN addition, if you go anywhere in the world and say you are an American, people think of the US, not any other country in the North, Central, or South American continents.

What else should we be called? United Statesians?
We're Americans. Have you ever heard a Canadian refer to himself as American? Have you ever heard a Mexican (in Mexico) refer to himself as American?

It's called invisable priviledge. People from South America are American's too, Canadians as well. ... Just imagine what other invisable privileges people are sucking up here in the US.
Thanks for posting your question ^_~
