I'm not automatically irritated by those who chew gum, but I am by those who do not do so politely. Gum can be a very effective tool to keep fresh breath, and for those who smoke or just have problems with halitosis, it's practically a must. But do so quietly, with your mouth closed. If you must speak with someone while chewing gum or answer the phone, keep it discretely tucked away in a corner of the mouth. And DO NOT chew huge "wads" of gum. Although many packets now come with a serving size of two of the little blister packs, one is quite sufficient for the job. And gum MUST be disposed of properly. If one is planning to have a meal, they should excuse themselves to the restroom, etc, where they can dispose of the gum in the trash and extract the gum in a non-offensive manner that's not within public view. If this is absolutely impossible, then a chewer must have a paper napkin which can be disposed of properly later, lift the napkin to their mouth as if wiping and discretely remove the gum from their mouth. Absolutely no excuses for improper disposal or impolite removal! It's not the habit of chewing gum that bothers me, but the fact that so many people fail to observe some basic tenants that would make it less noticeable to others.

You know what it is, I think it's more about the type of person that chews gum in that way, then the actual gum chewing itself. They'll be walking along chewing away like some kind of bovine, making enough noise to make your stomach curdle and to add to it they have the ' attitude' with it. So, gum chewers beware there is a growing force on the look out to halt your anti-social ways.

Yes, I hate gum chewers. Not only is it noisy, but it looks gross. It's almost as bad as people who chew tobacco which is very common here in Texas. As one teacher describe it, "It's like a cow chewing on it's cud" I saw David Letterman give a Kleenex tissue to a star he was interviewing, to spit out the gum she was chewing (I don't remember who she was)

Perhaps YOU should try chewing gum to relieve your stress. You sound really uptight.
