Lots and lots of unstructured and structured exercise can help rechannel some of the mental energy into physical activity. Milder forms of ADD can be exacerbated by inactivity. Whatever you do, don't stiffle your kid or constantly nag/discipline him/her for being hyper - it just creates a stiffled, hyper person with low self-esteem.

There are herbal treatments for ADD/ADHD as well as dietary treatments. Whether or not these treatments will work depends on the person or the extent of the disorder. I would be weary when it comes to drugs because the long term effects of ritalin and other drugs like it include drug abuse specifically ritalin abuse as well as depression and other mood disorders. While some children may 'grow out' of add/adhd many do not and only learn to hide or cope with the disorder better. Others continue treatment through out their adult life.

Magnets have helped some people.
Grapeseed extract or pycnogenol has enjoyed some success (100-300 mg a day in divided doses); see Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, or Prescription For Natural Cures for a good discussion and useful suggestions for alternative remedies.
Good luck!

It can only be "fixed" without drugs.
Those symptoms are simply not a disease or condition.
You can find any personality traits then proceed to describe them and call the tendencies a "condition". Once you get enough people to go along with it there you have a real "physiological disease".
"They struggle"..everyone struggles its our job in life to come to terms with who we are and what makes us special and unique. Teaching people especially kids to lean on drugs and excuses will cause more problems in the long run than so called ADD ever will.
The real problem whether its excepting that people go through stages to some children act differently than we want to the kid is hurting..........is waiting to be addressed.

People with ADHD often self medicate with cannabis.Cannabis helps them focus on a particular task that they are doing without distraction. They feel that it really helps.
It looks like that it's th only natural illegal drug.-THC.
I wonder if Nabilone(cannbinoid licenced in Uk for treatment of nausea associated with chemotherapy) would have any beneficial effect.
there is a small risk of developing Psychosis with cannabis depending on your COMT (catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) gene.
COMT Val158Met polymorphism genotype is a safer genotype to have for anyone using cannabis.
Even in non ADHD people,a certain proportion of individuals who on cannabis are able to focus intensively on a particular subject of interest in great depth and inquisitiveness while thoroughly enjoying the whole experience of learning. This is a personal observation having seen several daily users of cannbis doing extremely well in their academic careers.THis is a minority group.

any child who has symptoms of ADD should not be allowed to consume sugar because it aggravates the problem. They should not have any white flour like what is commonly found in white bread and buns.
Hyperactive people are much worse after having sugar or white bread, it overstimulates the nervous system.
Russell Feingold had some information about diet on his website several months ago. Maybe it is still there you can try.

Yes, there are options.
There is an organization, called CHADD, that has a lot of information on the subject. Their website is: www.CHADD.org
Also you may want to check out the following book:
DRIVEN TO DISTRACTION
Recognizing and Coping with Attention Deficit Disorder from Childhood Through Adulthood
by Edward M. Hallowell, M.D. and John Ratey, M.D.
Dr. Hallowell's group explores different options in his book and in his practice.
Good luck.
