In spite of the misinformation put out by the Christian right at the moment, reliable tests in Europe & Australia (probably America as well, but I havent read them) state that condoms have roughly a 2% failure rate. This means that 98% of the time, they work perfectly. In the other 2% of the time, it is possible to contract STI's or fall pregnant, however, it is not a 100% guarantee.

Basically, a condom is the most effective way to protect yourself and your partner. The chances of it failing are very low.

Also, ignore the misinformation that some church groups have been putting out (especially in Africa) in the past few years, claiming that condoms actually increase the risk of getting AIDS. This is complete bullsh.it, and not physically possible. The people spreading it should be lynched.

... further studies have supplied evidence that should set the condom issue straight. Medical evidence now shows that consistent use of condoms reduces the risk of transmission in men and women of

HIV (by 80 percent)
Gonorrhea
Chlamydia
Herpes simplex virus
(Note: The prevention of the last three STDs has not been absolutely quantified, because no one is suggesting that a person known to have one of these treatable infections have regular intercourse with an unaffected partner, unless they use condoms and/or are appropriately treated. Condom protection against HIV has been studied, especially in countries where therapies are often unavailable or unaffordable.)

From an article on msnbc.com

Also, it's my understanding that effectiveness increases when used in conjuction with Nonoxynol-9 spermicide and/or a female condom or both.

**The article and other articles also remind us that the only way to prevent it completely is to abstain from sex until marriage with a non-positive partner, then abstain from extra-marital relations

The failure rate of condoms is around 3%. If the condom doesn't break and it is used correctly, the chances of contracting the disease, especially through one isolated time with this person, is extremely low. I'm not aware of any studies that show specific numbers as far as the chances of contracting the disease with the use of a condom, but thats because it doesn't happen often.
