Problem oriented policing is a part of the big Community Oriented Policing (COPS) picture. The coppers keep tabs, geographically speaking, usually on a com/stat program. Say like, where the most accidents occur, where most cars are stolen and where the break ins are occuring, when a person calls to complain about juveniles walking in the street etc, in their respective cities or as they say jurisdictions. From those stats unlike the old map and pin era from a few years ago the programs break down the incidents into times of day and other areas to see if there are patterns. Then they patrol or stake out the area and make arrrests or in the case of accidents hand out tickets for red lights, speed, following too close, etc. A part of oriented policing are to keep in touch with their community by having police in their high schools, open monthly meetings with the public to hear areas of concern. Myself I prefer the old outdated irish way of policing...bonk the bad guys on the head and haul 'em into jail =-) I hope this helps!!!

Hi Christine! Problem oriented policing? That's when you have some dillema or difficulty in your neighborhood that is causing you a problem. Your neighbors? A car parked in front of your house that hasn't been moved for two weeks?
I don't know what Cool_Dude knows about police work, but if the cops patrolling your neighborhood can't correct the problem, you're not going to get it done. It's got nothin' to do with professionalism. Cops are not professional: That's why many of them wear a BLUE shirt. It's a BLUE COLLAR job!
If the cops patrolling your neighborhood don't want to do their job and help you, they are not solving your problem! It's as simple as that: The cop doing his job puts an end to your problem! That's problem oriented policing!

I think problem orientated policing is dealing not only with the organization itself, such as the structure, chain of command, duties/roles and so forth, but it also deals with the way police officers conduct themselves in a professional manner to the public. It talks about the historic times and the nature of policing and how it came about until the present.
Here in problem orientated policing identifies the different aspects of law enforcement responsibilities such as being reactive or proactive. Of course, the whole concept is to try being proactive so that crime can decline and be prevented.
It also entails about the theories in a police organization and which of them works best according to the community.
So therefore, this is just a rough idea of what I think is problem orientated policing. Hehe.....I had fun explaining this concept.

It means focuing law enactment and law enforcement measures toward addressing specific problems, and going after those acts and criminals that are most directly the cause of specific problems.
For example, say the problem is dangerous drugs. The efforts will be directed at addressing the source of the underlying problem, including the manufacturers and the distributors. Since arresting the users will not solve the problem, the efforts are directed elsewhere because if the source is stopped, most of the problem will go away with it.
