Maurice Harris, a fighter with a 9-8-2 record, was able to extend Holmes the 10 round distance to a close split decision in a fight many thought that Holmes lost. This was in 1997, but Holmes should have been able to do more with this kind of opponent even late in his career.

His fight against Tim Witherspoon, who wasn't even supposed to be a real challenge for The Champ, was in my opinion a gift to Holmes. He was completely dominated, Witherspoon even landed more jabs against a guy who's jab was legendary. Witherspoon was robbed, he beat Holmes that night.

But his defeat (twice) at the hands of Michael Spinks (who moved up from Light Heavy) would get my nod not only for the visible deterioration of Holmes boxing skills but more so by the unsportsman-like manner he carried himself afterward. He complained for years (probably still does if you let him).

Larry Holmes was a greatly underappreciated fighter. I believe he was the least impressive in his fight vs Witherspoon.

I see that this questions has dug up a lot of Holmes' haters (worms).
Here is a list of his least impressive performances:
Both fights against Spinks
Jimmy Young
Tim Witherspoon

His bout against Tyson on Jan. 22, 1988. (KO'd in the 4th Rd)

But, Holmes was 38 years old and Tyson was 21.

His hurdling performance when he leaped onto a car in order to get at Trevor Berbick in a street altercation, funny news footage caught the whole event. Edwin Moses had nothing to fear from Larry.

I would say his win over Carl "The Truth" Williams was rather lackluster. I guess you also have to include his TKO loss to Mike Tyson in 4 rounds.

Losing to Scandinavian slugger Brian Nielsen, perhaps? Either that, or not being able to outbox Mike Tyson and being knocked out so early.
