Ok, I am worried about the way that my son speaks. Everyone is saying Autism. But he is intellegent. he can sing any song after hearing it twice. He knows is alphabet, can count to twenty, knows his name, and if i give him direction, such as sit down, go to your room, put it in the trash/sink, lets take a bath, ect, he knows what im saying and will follow instruction. he just will not talk to me. and like i said before, the things he says are in sentences, but they are completely random. Still need help.

I would consult a doctor. From you've said here it sounds like he could be mildly autistic. Or, he is just a 3 yr. old.
I knew a child who was autistic. He was very intelligent. But he did not talk to people. He didn't even look at people. I mean, he'd look at you but it was like he was looking through you. I could ask him to sing a Wiggles song and he'd do it. But if I tried to engage him in conversation he would shut down or just repeat what I said. I once tried asking him how he liked preschool. He'd just say, "How you like preschool?" He'd never answer. He was the same age as my own son but I could actually hold a conversation with my child. After awhile the other children stopped wanting to play with this kid because he was there but didn't interact. He also would say things that didn't make sense--if he bothered to talk. He hated being touched and would freak over certain noises. Or he'd mimic a noise over and over.
Yet, he was really, really smart. He could sit and play computer games. already had a knack for reading music, etc.

autistic kids are extremely intelligent. but don't freak out because everyone is using that label. autism really is about a different way of looking at the world. with therapy it's effects can be helped greatly.
the thing that worries me is that he is not talking to you and is repeating random phrases.
this is known as echolalia (repeating words or phrases in place of common speech).
this is a sign of autism.
other things you may want to take note of
does he have difficulty mixing with other children?
does he have uneven fine/gross motor skills?
does he not make eye contact with people?
does he insist on a routine?
does he get exetremely upset if the routine is changed?
does he have excessive tantrums for seemingly no reason?
does he abnormal attachement to objects?
does he really like spinning things?
seperately these things may seem like just part of being a kid but taken together it could mean that your son may be autistic.
you should take him to a doctor because nothing anyone is going to say on here is really going to suffice and a doctor can tell you what's going on and what the next step is.
One of my friends has a son who was diagnosed as having Asperger's (mild autism). he speaks. at three he can draw any shape you ask him to (I'm talking rhombus equilateral triangles parallelograms etc) he can sight read words like asparagus and conundrum. he actually interacts with people moderately well. but he also doesn't understand consequences for actions and that what he does has an effect on something else. Actually I have about three friends with children who are going through the same thing. all of these kids are incredibley bright but they have problems communicating and connecting with the rest of the world.

Autistic children have
1. communication difficulties-(late language develoment),
2. repetitive behavior-(like he wants routinary situations and if it changes it will disturb and upset him),
3. lacks in social interaction-(he wants to be alone or with one person only
But in the other hand autistic children have relatively High IQ's and Low IQ's. Your child belongs to the first one if he can sing, knows the alphabet and is taking your instructions.
See a doctor. I know there are autism therapies. With intense therapy and practice and schooling, some children diagnosed with autism can improve their social and other skills to the point where they can fully participate in mainstream education and social events.
Goodluck. God bless

Poor or random speech as you say, is only one symptom of autism. How does he interact with other kids and you? Does he not want to recieve or give affection? Is he unusually shy? Is he obsessed with routine? He does headbang? See a dr if you're worried.

Autism doesn't mean "retarded", or Stupid. Sounds to me like he has a form of Autism. Talk with his doctor and listen to what the doctor has to say...you are sorely in need of an education in this matter.

It could still be a form of autism. There are High-functioning autistics that can memorize things after hearing them just a couple of times. You should still have him tested.

Have you taken him to a speach therapist? He may just have a delay in speach development. Or he may just not have anything to say, What I mean is does he talk to his toys or siblings? My bestfriend's sister would not talk either. After lots of doc and tests they determined she just did not want to talk. One day she just walked into the kitchen and asked what was for dinner. He may also not realize that his random thoughts are being spoken out loud. What does his doc say?

All I know is that kids who do have autism tend to be extremely smart. I would ask his pediatricain about it. It could be a number of things. Best Wishes!
