Hi
I underwent a root canal treatment about four months back but have not fixed a tooth cap till now .
I approched a dentist last week for fixing a cap.As there was a minor fracture on the teeth he removed the existing filling and then did a composit refill.
He also did some grinding of the teeth and has also taken some measurments for the cap.
But I am having severe pain on the teeth after this. The pain occurs only if I gargle with water and will last for a couple of minutes.
I am able to chew without any pain. The dentist said that it could be just the sensitivity and will last for about 10 days.
He also took an xray to confirm the filling is fine.
He said that since a root canal treatement has been done on that teeth there is no way that the tooth should give any problems.
Just wanted to know if sensitivity will give a lot of pain and why is it happening only when I gargle with water?

Pain happens only with cold water.Do not have any problem if I use hot water.
There is no infection on the teeth as the dentist have refilled it last week.

well he is correct that the pain is due to the sensitivity but after root canal is done there no nerves left in the that teeth region which will give pain...ther's still some infection left there....ask him to take a deeper look and if still ther's sm infection left...get it removed n den get the capping done.after capping it pains a little smtimes...after having too cold things n stuff...but goes gradually
dont give so much long gap to get the capping done....

few more detaild have to be know to give a correct reason.
If the RCT(Root Canal Treatment) is done for all the roots of that teeth then there should be no sensitivity in that tooth. pain must be from adjacent tooth as some of the root potion must be exposed. After cap is fixed it will be fine.
You said the dentist took another x-ray to confirm the filling, at the same time he must have cnfirmed the RCT too, and the reason too. So it must be fine don't worry.
Sensitivity pain occurs when cold or hot substance comes in contact with root potion or dentine, you will have pain.

After a tooth has had a root canal therapy (RCT), there will be no pain brought on by hot/cold/sweet/salty because there is no nerve. Therefore your cold sensitivity pain must come from another tooth - check other teeth on that side of the jaw, top and bottom.
If an RCT fails, you will have pain upon chewing, or a deep ache.
Look also for aggravating factors that contribute to general tooth sensitivity such as soda, juices, sports drinks, chewable Vit C tablets.

ones rct is done usually tooth wont responds to thermal changes, u r not getting pain on chewing cause there is no contact with upper tooth cause prepared for crown, sensitivity may be because left out nerves, not possible checked with x-ray and is fine, may be adjacent tooth having been exposed after preparing for the cap, or opposing tooth, get it rechecked, if ur getting sensitvity it is easy to identyfy the tooth that giving this trouble,

root canals suck...i heard they only last a while and then they end up giving you problems again...there is sensitivity probably due to the work done to it and the nerve being so sensitive.

Is the water cold, which I would assume may bother the teeth around it, the gums, etc. Is he sure there is no infection?
