Fear of driving is so common!
First off, are you afraid of not knowing how to control your car? Then you can take a driving course that way you can have someone to talk and help you drive through different situations. If you've done that, how about a defensive driving course? This will help you lower your car insurance also. Just ask your local Police for local Defensive Driving Schools.
Are you afraid of how others react on the road?
Again, the schools help a great deal and benefit when it comes to car insurance rates.
It sounds like those to combined make you worry about accidents. But it sounds like there is more to your question...can you be more specific?
Truthfully, your fears could be conquered just by daily driving. Find less travelled roads, give yourself more driving time for trips and or appointments, stay focused, don't let other drivers upset you!...I've seen some lulus out there! And just the same, don't be too quick to judge and react in an unkind manner.
If there are BAD drivers that offend you, write their license# on a small notebook that you can keep in your vehicle.
Lastly, talk out your incidents with someone so that you can become more familiar with the proper way to react...ie...when or when not to apply the gas or using the 2 second rule on the interstate...etc...
You'll be fine. Practice and enjoy!

See if there is a Driving School or perhaps your local school or college has Driving Classes.

Assuming your fear is HUGE .., I would recommend starting at a Go-Cart track. While driving a car is not quite the same as driving a go-cart, it may help build your confidence in your ability to not hit other drivers.

Next I would see if a friend would drive you to a vacant parking lot on Sunday (assuming the business is closed - else-wise forget it) and practice turns. Have your friend show you how to park proper and also use the unstriped drive areas as pretend roads. Thats one confidence builder I used for my daughter.

Judging distance is important so you don't run in a ditch or another car and using Empty Egg Crates set up a driving path. Egg Cartons wont sue you if you crunch em and will help you to hone your skills.

I am sure your friend(s) can help you much. If you are a teen, better get your parents to help you with the above, not a fellow teen. Trust me, I know what I am talking about.

Take drivers lessons and drivers ed. Get some good instruction so that you can have confidence in your driving skills. A lot of it is book learning and video watching - so it's an easy warm up.

Use a car that's designed for passenger safety - like a Volvo. You'll feel safer. Perhaps buy a bigger car or a van.

Take short test drives with an experienced driver in rural areas. Practice swerving, braking, stopping, starting, turning. Until you feel you can comfortably maneuver the vehicle.

Don't place yourself in hazardous driving conditions that might re-activate your fear. Avoid snowstorms, hard rain, traffic jams at rush hour and city traffic until you have driven safely for some time. Always drive the speed limit and keep space between yourself and the guy in front.

Remember that you are a capable adult, and if 90 yr old ladies can do it, so can you!

Well I'm no psychologist but from my own personal experience the answer would have to be exposure in small doses. For example have a person you feel comfortable with take you to an open relatively unused parking in a car that you feel comfortable driving. Then just drive around the parking lot. Then every couple of weeks increase the amount and distance that you drive. I don't know where you live but if there's any rarely used paved country roads that might also be good. But the most important part is to try not to push yourself too hard and drive with someone you feel safe with. Good luck.

Fear of driving is a tough one to beat. I suggest having a good friend to tends to be very calm drive out into the country, or some place like an large empty parking lot where there are no cars, and get comfortable with driving there, then slowly work your way up to driving in areas that have more traffic. So that you can get used to driving in traffic and build confidence in your ability to drive safely and defensively. And maybe even take a defensive driving course. It's worked for me. But be sure to work up way up though the different levels of traffic slowly enough, panic attacks while driving in heavy traffic are not a good thing.

What do you mean by preaching? However I shall go on to give you my understanding of fear. Fear cannot be killed or done away with. Fear is a reality and you cannot get rid of it. The practical thing to do is to be aware of fear as and when it arises within you. What is after all fear? It arises out of the sense of impending danger. You forsee a danger to your and your dear one's life, security, danger of a loss etc. Its generally with respect to the future. If you come across a situation suddenly wherein there is danger you act instantly. In such a case there is no time for fear to arise. Thus fear is always in relation to the future. So fear arises as a result of your memory from the past moving into the future. Fear is only in the mind. Its a product of your thoughts. They say courage is not the lack of fear but its the will to act despite fear. You should not deny fear or run away from it. We must be aware of the fear in us, understand and know how and why the fear is there and this understanding will ultimately help you in overcoming fear.

Step 1. You are already going to die. When and how nobody knows so just tackle any situation or any obstacle like its your last.

Step 2. Ask yourself how you would like to die? By cancer? By car accident? By poison? By getting Shot? Cancer is long and grueling. Poison can take awhile and can be painful. Getting shot does tremendous shock to ones body before you die. But a car accident can be instant. So get in that car and drive that sonofabitch.

Step 3. More people die of cancer each year than people dieing of car accidents in Antartica. So hop in your vehicle and think of riding on the road with intent of getting from point A to point B.

Step 4. Im drunk so you might not want to pay any attention to steps 1-3.

hope this helps (hic)
