Calves are one of the hardest muscles for a guy to build. Standing one leg calf raises, squats and stair climbing are all good calf exercises. If he has a gym membership have him talk with a personal trainer - they can suggest things for him to do as well.

I would suggest joining a health club or a gym, where they might have someone who can give him some guidence or even personal training.

If that's not an option because of money, then I would suggest the following:

If he's in really bad shape, then he should start out slow by walking. When I was a lot younger, I use to walk somewhere around 25 miles every Saturday, and I use to run too. My legs were so built up that when I got into an accident and they put my leg into a full length cast, they ended up having to give me a new cast a few weeks later because my thigh shrank so much.

My health recently took a nose dive a couple years ago, but I started walking again to build up my immune system to try and stay out of the hospital. I can no longer walk the distance that I use to. These days, I can only walk around the indoor track 3.5 times at the health club and it takes me a while to do it. Plus, it took me a while to work up to doing that many.

The point is your husband should take it slow if he's in bad shape and slowly increase his workout. If there is some place where there is steps nearby he can go up and down those.

I have heard that leg curls and weight on legs help this area.
Hope some thing works for him soon. And men say they are not vain about their body. ha ha ha
For the mid section, get him an exercise ball and do stomach crunches on it. They are better on the back and it is also fun. You and him both can find a reason to keep it out of the closet. lol

Genetics, which is hard to fight. Weight training is the best way to help, do sprints not long-distance running, too. Make sure he eats plenty of quality protein.

try some lunges, with weights in his hands. or laying on the bench and pressing with his legs.
