It can be a helpful tool, especially when you are in crowded places.
I wouldn't use it all the time. You want your child to learn to stay with you and be cooperative. Best of that is done willingly, not by duress.
But I don't look down on people who use a harness, unless they are cruel in the way they use it.

I work in a department store. I think the harnesses are GREAT!! Keeps the kids within arms reach of the parents, keeps them from running towards the escalator like I see a LOT of little ones do. Prevents the kid from wandering off while the parents have their head up their butt paying attention to everything BUT the whereabouts of their kid.
Get the harness and if someone says something tell them to piss off!

You should not need one if you teach your child from day one to always hold your hand. If he cant' then he goes in the stroller or the shopping cart. My daughter loves to run where ever we go. It was difficult to teach her that she has to stay with mom or dad. But with patience it worked. I don't like the child harness because the child doesn't look where they are going and are walking in front of people and then the leash gets tangled up with other people. Also if you child was to get tangled then someone could cut it and be off with your child before you realize they are gone. So if they are holding your hand then you would know if someone tried to run with them.
I think the biggest thing is that children are not animals, though they do act like it sometimes, and should be treated as such.

I use it on my son since when he sees something he likes he runs for it. My son's harness doesn't look like a harness to much it looks like he has a monkey on his back and I'm holding the tail. The tail can also come off and the monkey has a pocket so it is like a backpack with out the tail. Looks alot better than the ones that were availible when I was younger. They went on the wrist and looked like they were made out of a curly phone cord.
Btw like my parents I only use mine when we are at very crowded places, theme parks, travel, etc. These days you can't trust people if your kid gets lost.

I have three kids including a very active little boy and I've never used one, I think they look like dog leashes. I very rarely see people using them and I can only think of a few times I might want to use one - maybe an airport? or Disneyland?
However - it's your kid. If you feel you need one to keep him safe it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

My husbands mother used a harness on him as a toddler. He still remembers the embarrasment even as a adult. I have 2 boys 19 months apart and have never used one. Its a child not a pet.
If you only have one child it wont be too bad just think all that running after them is actually good exercise.

The harness for a toddler not only keeps the child safer but also gives him/her the freedom to use both of their hands rather than being held by one. Don't worry about what other people think. Do what is best for you and your child.

I have a 4 year old boy, a 2 year old girl and a 6 month old boy. I have one for my oldest. I know that people think that is looks like a least, but at least I know where my son is at all times and no one is going to snatch him during that split second that I am turned around..

I used one for my daughter. I think it gave her more freedom because she could explore a step or two away. I didn't have to fight her trying to wiggle out of my arms or fingers. Since I only used it for events like parades, fairs, zoos, etc. she loved it. She knew if I reached for that red strap we were going someplace FUN. And yes, people did look at me funny, but I bet none of those people ever had a child wiggle away from your hand and run into a parking lot

I personally wouldn't use a harness with my 3 year old. He was taught to hold hands with me and/or his dad while in public. I was talking to this woman that was seven months pregnant and she said that she uses it sometimes when she can't keep up with HER toddler. I guess in that situation it's OK. But now that your little one's starting to walk(yay!), teach him/her to hold your hand.
