I heard somewhere that the new definition of death is when brain activity stops, which is a few minutes after your heart stops.

I myself am no doctor, as a matter of fact i am only 13 years of age but i think that the brain can stay alive after death, it can quite possibly reverse death itself. the brain can stay alive after death but only for a few seconds in some extreme cases humans have been able to stay alive after their heart stops for any time of 1 to in one case 12 minuets. if doctors can figure out what lets humans stay alive for this time, weather it be the oxygen in your body or just the electrical impulses in the brain. it has also been found that people who are near death yet use more brain activity can stay alive longer then people who don't. and i myself plan on testing this on mice. but when the doctors use a defibrillator it sends electrical impulses to the heat but more importantly to the brain. when i grow older i plan on proving that death is reversible by stimulation of the brain and if not hat the brains memories and data can be triggered and not lost. almost like the animus from the assassins creed series, but not with ancestors just with the memories from the person if you keep the brain. but after more medical discoveries in the future death may be laughed at or not even a reality for humans. and i myself will be proving this with what, where and when i can.

No, the brain ceasing to function after death. No O2, no blood supply,no heart beat=death. It does not function at all. The last thing to go for the human in the dying process is "hearing", then it is all over. And even that is just mere minutes as well;everything shuts down without blood flow to vital organs to keep them alive. Hope this helps..

since after death the total functioning of the body stops, then automatically the function of the brain also stops. since the function of all the parts of the body is under the control of brain only and the pumping and the circulation of blood is done by heart itself only. at last I want to say you that after death not only the brain any part of the body doesn't function, as stimulation stops.

After the heart stops, the brain can only function for 5min without oxygen, before shutting down completely and that s when you are perceive to be death.

Not unless you're in a George Romero movie. In some instances, the brain dies before the body does.

No.
Brain death, can occur without the body dying, but the body dying cannot sustain the brain.

everyone else is saying no, but I say yes.
supposedly if your head is cut off, you can still see and hear and perceive everything that goes on for like 8 seconds.
and no brain activity on a machine supposedly means brain dead, even though the body is still living.
but maybe those machines that measure brain activity arent correct.
maybe the brain is still living until it dries up completely, just as a flower is officially dead once it is totally dried out.
when you find out through experience, you let us know.

The brain cannot survive 10 minutes without oxygen.

No. Death means cessation of oxygen intake. The brain, once deprived of oxygen will die even ahead of the body.
