I usually run by time. When I first started I ran for 10 minutes. That was all I could do. After only a week or so I started increasing it by a few minutes here or there. After awhile I was up to 45 minutes at a time. I only ran three days a week though because your body needs the break. I don't run right now because I'm pregnant and I think I'm a bit low on iron. I exercise but I'm having problems with cardio.
Just start slow and gradually increase your workout. Oh, and invest in some really great shoes.

When I first started running a year ago, I jogged a block and walked a block for 1.5 miles. Every other day, I would increase the jog by a block.
The key is to start off slow/short and work your way up. It's an endurance sport.
Get GOOD running shoes.
When you increase your distance, slow down.

I don't know about running but walking fast is just as good for your heart, to keep in shape. I find that walking on a treadmill at the gym is good exercise plus sometimes I take it up a notch do a little running on the treadmill. I usually do 100 reps on the treadmill, then add other exercise equipment as well for a total of 1 hour every other day.

My Doctor told me to run for 15 to 20 minutes for at least 3 days and if you can do it without any difficulty, try elongating the time as you think you can.
