I have a femal dacshund that isnt fixed. a few weeks ago i bought a new puppy about 6 weeks old, and ever since then, the femal dog started producing milk. i know she isnt pregnant. is this normal? should i take her to the vet to get that shot that dries up the milk? the new puppy has been nursing her, but i don't think it will be enough. what should i do?

it happens, i had a cat (fixed) that nursed the new kittens i brought home.......the maternal feelings effect the milk production. she'll probably wean him in 6 weeks and he'll be fine nursing until then.

Her hormones are kicking in. Let the puppy nurse her. It won't hurt anything and it will help them bond to each other. I had a poodle that nursed some kittens like this. The dog had never been pregnant, never had pups, but these four kittens started nursing her about 6 weeks after they had been weaned by the mama cat. The poosle made milk and nursed these kitties for another 4 weeks.

Female dogs that are bred sometimes experience a false pregnancy. It happened to my dog. It's perfectly fine - but you can bring her to the vet if you are concerned. My advice would be wrap her tummy with a bandage, the pressure will cause the teats to stop lactating.

She could be pregnant or she could be having a false pregnacy. Yes I would take her to the vet for a checkup. Dogs do have false pregnacys and can produce milk and start nesting, etc.

Do you know that this can happen in women when they adopt. There are some women who produce milk for their adopted baby. Let her feed the puppy.
