My daughter is seven, and she has the odd habit of sucking her index and middle finger, which has given her buck teeth. Her only permanent teeth so far are her two bottom front teeth. Her dentist said last visit that she is concerned, but she wanted to see how her baby teeth grow in. I am very concerned, I do not want to set up my daughter for a life time of bad teeth. When should a referral be made to an orthodontist, and what age is appropriate to begin use of a retainer, and what would the cost be? Thank you in advance.

my daughter sucked her thumb and her front teeth stuck out. When she turned 7 I told her it was time to stop sucking because she was ruining her teeth. She looked in the mirror and saw what I meant. She made a concious effort to stop. And did. Though you can get a retainer clip that goes on the front teeth that stops the suction for about $400. However, I don't think you really need to worry until her adult teeth start to come in.

(And yes your dentist can pull baby teeth. She did with my daughter) And anyone who puts braces on an 8 yr old has too much $$ to spend)

If your dentist told you the reason she has bucked teeth is from sucking her fingers I suggest you get another dentist as this is an "old wives tale" told to keep children from sucking fingers or thumbs. The only reason your child would be bucked toothed is if it were somewhere in her genitc make up. I was born with a small upper jaw that actually comes to a point...so my two front teeth stuck out, it had nothing to do with my sucking of my fingers, my mother has the same small jaw with a point at her two front teeht (back when she first got false teeth they were quite difficult to fit) Retainer's are usually used around the onset of puberty...I don't know what the cost would be that you would have to take up with the dentist.

My husband's niece was only 8 when she had to get braces. First you need to break your daughter of the habit of sucking on her fingers, or anything you do will just be a big waste of money. His niece's teeth are so bad that she has to get braces twice. She has had her's for about a year, but she is having them taken off soon and has to have them again in 2 years.

well around 11 and up most orthodontist won't see your child unless all permanent teeth are in there not gonna pull baby teeth but the cost is around 2000 and up and it depends on how bad the teeth are but normally 2 years with braces and 1 year with retainer

everlasting retainers will save your enamel straighter and do not favor as a lot upkeep to save up with the artwork your dentist did (because you enamel will prefer to bypass again perpetually). also, you'll under no circumstances ought to agonize about dropping your retainer or having a canines/youngster chewing on them. evening retainers can harm your enamel in case you haven't worn them in a lengthy time period so that you would possibly want to take them out contained in the evening without understanding it. yet with everlasting retainers you'll consistently ought to apply floss threaders making it extra complicated to floss, and on the grounds that maximum folk do not floss adequate, something making flossing extra complicated for a occasional flosser isn't sturdy. everlasting retainers can be painful in the experience that they destroy and also you need to attend till you would possibly want to be considered to get your orthodontist to fix a poking cord or whatnot. I want i might want to have had a customary retainer fairly of the sparkling one because it stretches out through the years so i'm consistently having to bypass again in and they destroy (not fairly yet more effective than under no circumstances it really is stressful) also, my canines bypass a carry of my retainer one evening I pulled it out and that i might want to not get again to the orthodontist for some weeks so my enamel all started shifting.

ok heres my opinion. get some sour apple bitter tasting stuff and put it on her fingers asap. my cousin did this, and they had to stretch the roof of her mouth which is very painful. granted she probly will already have bad teeth, you should break the habit NOW. everytime you see her do it smack her hand. and ortho refferals usually happen when they are 11 or 12. try and break her of this habbit now, it will save her alot of pain
