I'm finally getting around to using some brownie mixes I picked up a bit ago when they were on sale, but I just noticed that the "Best By:" date is May 2006 (and we are now in September). Would it still be okay to use or should I just toss it? Does it really "go bad?"

I made the brownies last night, and they seem to have turned out just fine. :) Thanks for the help!

you could probably use it if it is not that far from being unexpired.
those are just guidelines to protect the manufacturer from liability if things get very old. If the package is unopened and it looks ok and smells ok it probably is ok.
I have baked up plenty of box mixes within a year of the expire date and they were all fine. now if the date were 2004 I would reconsider but 3-4 months on a box mix wont make that much difference

NO.
Thats a marketing ploy. That way you are always replacing what you have to chuck out cause of dating. The brownie mix should be just fine. Now if it were dated May 2001 ... I might consider throwing it away. Good luck and enjoy!

The FDA says they must have expiration dates, if your brownie mix is dry and powdery and there are no holes in the bag, it is fine.
Go ahead and use it, if you use a cake that is suppose to rise or something with yeast, it may not rise as high, but it will still be safe.

Personally, I wouldn't use anything that has passed the expiry date. It's there for a reason. Also, be really careful when buying things that on sale. Sometimes they are close to the expiry date.

yes, it really goes bad. maybe not this soon (may 2006 should still be edible) but it can get a really gross flavor, and they might not bake properly, baking soda, yeast, all that stuff has a limited shelf life, as all foods do.

Go ahead, live dangerously!!
I'd use it. It may be "Best" by May, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's "bad" by September. lol

May not taste too great-depends what's in the mix. I doubt it would make you ill.
