Tamales and soup. Tamales is a group thing, and you have to work together making them.
Baking is good, and pretty easy, one person stirs, the other adds.
Just find a recipe that takes two people, or could easily use two people. It's sort of boring having one person cut while another is just sauteing, or doing something else.

If I'm cooking with someone I usually pick a recipe from a culture that usually has social cooking, like mexican, vietnamese, or my favorite soul food. European food is usually made by one person, and isn't fun in a group.

Lasagna or another strata (layer) food.
It's fun to make together because there's a lot of prep work. Use the recipe on the Barilla lasagna pasta (no bake) box.
Green Salad
French or Italian style Bread
a light, creamy dessert like Tiramisu.

Does your mother make a special dish that you would love to know how to prepare? I would pick something that you can learn from her. Knowing how to cook things that the people we love make so well really means a lot.

"soup chicken". it's easy, yummy and fun. sautee up some vegetables (like onions, bell peppers, broccoli, whatever) and chicken pieces. when everything is nearly cooked, add a can of mushroom soup (campbells) and let it simmer a bit. then serve over rice. Mmmmm. finish off with some classic chocolate chip cookies.
