The blood has to be gross enough to be seen by the eyes.Depends on if it is fresh blood or black stools. Haemorrhoids is one reason, another is dysentrry but it happens only once in a while, not too frequent. If there is haemorrhoids one feels something coming out of the anus although in the early stages of first degree hemorrhoids there may be only bleeding. a per rectal examination will rule out otherwise it maybe from the intestines, a polyp may be there in the intestine or a meckels diverticulum , a congenital condition. Also there may be ulcerative colitis a condition where colon has ulcers, In all these cases a colonoscopy should be undertaken. Dont worry about colon cancer. it is an uncommon condition and usually presents with a hidden blood in the stool what is known as an occult blood. Have a routine stool analysis done and Do consult a surgeon if it persists.
All in all the most common causes are hemorrhoids and ulcerative colitis an immunological condition in which there are ulcers in the large intestine. It can be treated by medications instead of surgery.
Have a sigmoidoscopy and/or colonoscopy done and a barium dye may be injected from the lower end to see the extent and nature of the disease. All in all dont wait on it and refer to a surgeon.

When I was 19, I had the same problem. It turned out to be Crohn's disease, however, it could also be ulcerative colitis. These 2 diseases are inflammatory bowel diseases. There is no cure. You will be given medications but eventually you could end up getting an ileostomy or colectomy. You need to get to a gastroenterologist NOW cause you can die from loosing too much blood and your blood count will get real low. You could also have polyps in the intestine, colon cancer, hemorrhoids, or if you have anal sex- you could of hurt yourself. Nevertheless, you need to see the gastro now to get taken care of. Blood in the stool is SERIOUS now....take it from someone who has been ill for 30 yrs...If you need to talk later you can contact me at mysticmoonprincess01@yahoo.com

Any blood in the stool is not good. If it is bright red it will probably be Hemmoroids. If it is dark, or black it could be an intestional bleed...Like a leiason in the colon...need to see your
Doctor, but if it continues you are in for some testing. Could be a stomach bleed, small intestine (unusual) ulcer.
How long has this been going on, or did you just notice it?
