that bite people? My puppy that is soon to be 4 months (had her since she was 8 weeks) bites my family members including me and people who come over the house. Is this normal or does she have behavioral problems? If so, then how do I fix this problem? (not by getting rid of her... etc.)

I have a Golden Retriever that is soon to be 6 months. And I have a daughter that is 4, my golden is so mean to her. Its just a puppy thing. Golden's can be pretty big jerks until there about 11/2 or 2 then they calm down and there the best dogs ever. My husband mom has one thats 2 hes really calmed down a lot. There really great dogs very smart and sweet, dealing with the puppy stage is a hloe diff story. Odds are that she will grow out of it. My boy(Carson) is just now getting better. Good luck

Golden Retrievers are very playful. Your puppy is only 4 months old. When you say biting people is she biting with aggression or is just playing?

When she bites, close her mouth and tell her no. Let go immediately, and repeat until she gives up on the biting. If she is actually biting with aggression that is out of character for this dog! She may be in pain for some reason and may need veterinary care.

the best thing to do would talk to a professional dog trainer. make sure they have some type of schooling. 4 months old is very young, she is still a baby. she needs to learn that you are the boss.preferably before she gets to be full grown. do not hit her. try alpha rolling her when she bites you. golden retreivers are a breed that usually has a job, everyday. and when she just sits at home all day with no exercise or stimulation they tend to be bored and have behavoiral issues. try playing fetch or fisbee, or since shes still a puppy just running around the yard and playing. she needs to get the energy out and she will be more laid back. research online some things you can do with her like flyball or other games. golden retreivers are very smart dogs and can make great pets, but all dogs need discipline and exercise and love. if you are considering finding a new home for her i would decide soon because it will be hard to find her a home if she is not a puppy. just do your research. vets or kennels can usually refer good trainers to you. the dog whisperer on ngc is a really good show

Your dog may be playing & doesn't know yet that this is improper behavior. Puppies will fight & nip at each other as a form of play. You have to teach her to not do this. It's actually rare that Golden Retrievers bite people (but not entirely unheard of). The dog needs to be properly trained so she can learn that biting people is not acceptable -otherwise she'll grow into a large dog who thinks that biting people is acceptable play (which would be a real problem).

Golden's are generally a well-balanced breed that do great in families. She's just a pup, but NOW is the time to fix this future problem. What she's probably doing is play biting (roughhousing). You need to stop all aggressive play that involves wrestling with her snout. Correct her every time she gnaws or nips at someone. The best way to correct her is by gathering all of your fingertips in one hand together (like you would do in a closed mouth sock puppet) and peck her fur rapidly (once) while making a loud "Pssst" sound. Remember that you just want to startle her and get her attention, not give her any pain. Do this for a couple of weeks EVERY time that she reverts back to mouth-play and she'll learn that she can fetch and chase, but biting isn't OK by her Alpha leader.

Good luck!

she's probably just being playful... when puppies paly with each other they nip and bite... not usually hard. If that's all she's doing then just try teaching her that it's not okay. I just got a puppy, same age as yours, and she does the same thing. When she nips or bites I gently hold her mouth shut and tell her no. She usually calms down and stops, for awhile. It'll take a little while to learn. Untill then if she's around kids with small fingers or people that aren't aware of the bitting put a muzzle on her. You can get a soft one at PetSmart for about $7.

Four months is a baby puppy! She learns by using her mouth as babies use their hands HOWEVER, it must be taught that they should NEVER use their teeth.
When she does this a firm NO, PHOOEY should be said in a deeper than normal voice. If she is on lead, use the same command and a collar correction.

Since there is SOOOOOOO much indiscriminate breeding within the Goldens now ( you know, the people that say I have a purebreed, you have a purebreed, lets breed them and become millionaires) there are Goldens that are so poorly bred and not socialized in the important infant stages of puppyhood that they are poor specimens of what the breed actually is supposed to be.

Get to Obedience classes and this will help. Socialize the pup as much as possible.

I hope I helped and good luck

Retrievers are not typically biting dogs. It sounds like your dog has a hierarchy issue. She thinks she's the Alpha Dog. You need to correct this!
Whenever she goes to bite someone, put her on the floor. Lay her down on the floor with her belly showing, and make her stay there till you feel comfortable letting her up.
Everytime she bites, put her on the floor and hold her there. Have your guests do this as well. You are showing her that you make the rules and she has to live by them.
Dogs really can be delightful, you just have to make them that way. Any dog will assume the Alpha role if the human isn't.

Most dogs when they are puppies do teeth, and I have a chihuahua, and she used to bite us and everything. If they are teething, then buy rawhides or dog toys for them to chew on. They'll eventually get over it, but if they do keep biting you or your family members, then scold your dog, because you don't want it to become a habit. Big dogs are generally very calm as they age. Also, get her around people often, and train her to obey you and to be people friendly. Treats work really well.

This would be a lack of prober training. Puppies will nip. There is some spray....Bitter Apple sold at Petco or Petsmart that you can spray on your hand purposely let her bite you sounds stupid but after tasting that stuff a few times she will never bite again. Its nasty. When my dogs would do this I would close my dogs mouth and tap her nose and say "NO BITING" but also use the spray. After putting it togather: Hand tastes nasty. She wont wanna do it again. NOTE: Remember to wash your hands after doing this incase you eventually put it in your mouth or something. Ewwwwww!
