Also, why do dogs eyes change color ? is it because of the lighting? I noticed my jack russell's eyes go green when he's scared but then red when he's sitting down...why is it the dog's can't give eye contact? i try to speak to my dog but he always turn away. he will look at me for a few minutes but will not stare into my eyes for that long... does that intimidate him??

Looking in a dogs eye is intimidation. Thats why they say when you come up on a strange aggressive dog not to intice him by starring at him. The eye color change your talking about is probably the lightening in the room..Like when you take a picture the eyes are red. Dogs have keen eyesight. As far as intelligence in a dog...I have to go w/the Pembroke Welsh Corgi. They are so easy to train and work w/. They are a very loyal dog and great w/the young to the old and other animals. I have had many differant types of dogs and this is the breed I chose to breed.

I would have to say German Sheperds are VERY intelligent. They work for police men. Come on.....And they dont choose German Sheperds cuz they are agressive....It is soo much more. They attack when told yet in a heartbeat drop bite and run back to the policeman. That takes some skill to be taught to obey commands QUICK. I do not believe policemen or even the military would choose a breed that is not intelligent to do the work German Shepherds do. On another note I have never seen a dogs eyes change color. Usually dogs that are agressive keep evey contact. Direct and prolonged eye contact is a sign of a challenge. So if your dog is not staring into your eyes I wouldnt worry about it.

I dont know what you want to know about The Jack Russell. I have one and he's a normal dog. As for intelligence...the border collie is thought to be the most intelligent. They can work a flock on their own because they can make decisions on their own without constantly being directed by a shepard.

No breed is more intelligent than another as breeds are meant to be strong in different areas. Is a bloodhound smarter because he uses his nose to find a suspect or is the Sighthound that sees him and takes him down smarter. It's like comparing apples to oranges. Can't be done.

Dogs eyes don't change color. It is the lighting that makes them appear to change.

Staring at a dog is considered a challenge to them. Never try to do that to a stray dog on the street or you might find out they like challenges. I am glad your dog accepts you as the Alpha as he does not challenge your stares.

Hope I helped.

Rat terriers are extremely intelligent and fun lovable dogs, but I think that German Shepards are probably the smartest dogs out there, they can be little aggressive but very smart. Im planning on getting a German Shepard when I have my yard in and a fence.

Boston Terriers are very very intelligent dogs. They catch on to new things, tricks, commands, even just speech really fast. My dogs don't look me in the eye either i think it's just simply a humbling respect thing. for the simple fact that if a dog is growling at you it look you in the eye. but your dog humbles itself to you and respects you. i don't think it means it's intimidated by you it's just to show respect to the owner.

ALL DOGS ARE INTELLIGENT, IF TRAINED & LOVED.
IF LEFT UNTRAINED, THATS THE OWNERS FAULT!
A DOG IS ONLY AS SMART AS HIS OWNER....
A DOGS EYES DON'T CHANGE COLORS...IT'S THE LIGHT AROUND THEM. MY DOGS ALWAYS KEPT EYE CONTACT WITH ME, WHEN I"M SPEAKING TO THEM.
THATS CALLED LOVE!

herding dogs such as Border Collies or German Shephards are often considered the smartest because they not only need to do stuff but they need to think about what the livestock is going to do.. and how to react to that..
