I like the question. My guess is that a wreck involves smasing and injuries, while an accident is more gentle.

I think it might have to do with the # of vehicles. For example a 2 car accident is blocking one lane... whereas a multi car wreck has closed the highway. Again, this is subjective to region which a few other people have very thoughtfully added. Good question, I'd never thought of it before.

An accident is what turns your car into a wreck. Also you can say "I wrecked my car" not "I accidented my car"
Then there is the popular " Our second child was an accident" and "I have two year old twins, that's why I'm such a wreck"

another difference is what part of the country you live in. south seems to like "wreck" for anything. north seems to prefer "accident" for anything. north east goes for "cluster-f***" while far west goes for "oh, wow, man"
