Always use smooth tires on any trainer... the MTB knobbies will not only be noisy, they will wear out and could damage the trainer over time...

Most of my friends and I use only road bikes with trainers, but if you really want to, use your MTB and get slicks.

Knobbies tend to slip under a load and will wear faster. Best bet is to go with a slick.

A treaded tire will get the job done but a slick will do it slightly better and much quieter. That's if your worried about making noise.

I don't really know about the tire wear issue, but the noise issue is..... "huge".
