I really do think it is too young. kids don't need to look like a model natural beauty is much better i think. doing things with your look and making your hair different colors makes you look older ten you are and as people get older they dont like it as much. so yes i do think it is too young.

My personal feeling is that the girl should be at least 13 or so for highlights, and older for all over dye. The up-keep alone take responsibility that a younger girl may not be up to, not to mention how other kids will act if she comes in with visible roots.
Dye is bad for hair. It dries it out, makes it weaker and more prone to damage and breaking, and it takes a long time for all the dye to be removed from the hair. Even the wash out ones can leave a residue behind that is bad for the hair.
Also, hair dye, makeup, heels, padded bras, etc... all are designer to make a woman look and feel better. A young girl doesn't need that attention from guys, and she should have other ways to look nice naturally. The sooner a girls starts artificially enhancing her appearance, the more she will end up doing in the long run. If she starts dying her hair at 10, then it's lip color at 11, eye makeup at 12, face makeup at 13... She wants to add the new things, so she can end up doing too much too soon. By the time she's 15, she will have run out of practical things to do, and maybe want to try the not so practical ones, like tattoos (in most places the legal age is at least 18).
While that may seem like a long way off, or that you won't have to worry about it, every decision should be made with the thought of how it will affect the child's future. Whether it's cosmetics, clothing, dating, or any other issue, the sooner she starts the further it will go. The longer it goes on with her getting her way, and the parent letting her, the harder it will be to put a stop to it when she goes too far.

Most highlighting and hair coloring products are so mild now.....I must be the "bad" mom on this Q & A......my daughter's 12 and she's had her hair highlighted (or colored darker) several times now, the first time when she was about 7. We were getting ready to take a very big, special vacation and she requested her hair highlighted as a special treat. If they are interested and are that young, always go to a professional first! I've dyed my hair since forever and have never had any bad dye jobs, had my hair fall out from overbleaching, etc. Guess I'm just lucky. But it's up to the individual parents and what the best interests are for them and their kids. Just to be on the safe side, check with a trusted stylist for professional advice. Everyone's hair is different, and what works for me (and my daughter) may not work for someone else. (And for the record, I don't let her dress trashy and believe me, that's no easy feat considering the clothing selections offered in the stores nowadays. She has no interest in tattoos even though ol' mom has 3, and she thinks piercings are gross. She's shown no interest in makeup either. She says please and thank you, and respects her elders and authority figures, and doesn't fuss over her chores. She maintains an A average, takes extra art and clarinet lessons after school and is involved with Jr. Thespians. I figure if all she wants is to dye her hair once or twice a year, it's the lesser of all the evils she could be doing. Parents should always maintain their 'parent' status, and should have the final say as to what their kids can and can't do! If kids are getting out of control, it's because the parents have allowed it to happen.)

I think that's way too young, I highlighted my hair when I was 12 which my parents weren't thrilled about but I think any younger than that is a bad idea--kids should look like kids, not little adults!

They are definitely too young. Kids (and that's what they are, KIDS) shouldn't be so focused on what they look like. Playing with mommy's make up for fun is one thing, colouring their hair is another. It's just too permanent. If I had a daughter (thank god I have a son instead), there's no way I would let her get her hair lighted that young. She'd be lucky if I let her do it when she was 15.

Waaayyy tooo young!!! I have worked in Elementary schools all the way to high schools and see for myself that they oversexualize girls at too young an age. These girls have french pedicures and manicures!! Belly button rings!! High Heels!! At EIGHT !!! Then parents are surprised when the girls form their identifies around what men think of them and get pregnant at 13. You bring it on yourselves people, let you daughters be little girls. Buy them toys, not leg and bikini waxes!! (not an exaggeration) Let them play on monkey bars not stripper poles!!

the only haircolor that truly suits a person is the one they're born in. let kids grow up wiht their natural color untill they are mature enough to make teh decision that changes their entire look. Wait untill the kid is at least 13 until you allowe any kind of unnuatural dyes. They also reduce the health and softness of a child's hair, and since they're little, they don't use conditioner to gain it back. Bottom line, wait. It's better for everyone.

My 12 year old asked if I would streak her hair and I did it for her, but she was 12 and not 5. Five years old is ridiculous!

That's horrible. I think a girl should be at least 16 before she can dye her hair.

yes it is too young, you don't need to get those chemicals into their scalp. Things do get absorbed into the skin and I just wouldn't do it for health reasons.
