Well it's sort of like a tattoo, or a stamp.Which kind of brands you for a couple of days Or until the next time Smart gals don't carry brands.

Why do dogs pee every few feets? answer to mark their territory. Hickeys are a form of branding. I honestly hate when my wife does that. She thinks its cute. I work in an office and it is not professional so I tell her not to.
but in essence is just a fomr of saying you are mine and letting other females know that or guys if on a girl.

I've never really had a hickey for some reason,
But I've had bruises and bite marks, and cat scratches, and lascerations, and well, I don't want to get too descriptive.

Hickeys are so tasteless and tacky looking. It's so disgusting to see someone with one. Yuck!

they don't really its just a immature way of 'branding' someone. its a public way of saying 'look i'm making out/having sex' and 'this person belongs to me'.....mature ppl don't need to advertise.
