By uniting your will with God's will.
By detatching from the created things of this world, so that you are more clearly able to discern God's will and not confuse it with your own.
By recognizing that God is not some remote being totally detatched from this world. He is present in all that we do, all that we endure, everything that happens to us, and everyone that we encounter. The way that we live, the way that we treat our fellow man, the way that we respond to adversity - and to good fortune - should reflect this knowledge.
By seeking the narrow path, the best choice, every step of this journey.

Anyone who 1) is assured of attaining heaven, or 2) has actually made it into heaven, is a saint.
There are considerable differences of opinion as to whether anyone still alive on earth is assured of heaven, so the Catholic church has developed an offical process whereby we can know, with certainty, whether certain individuals are indeed, there.
The church also offers a number of special blessings and sacraments which, when administered at or near the time of death, can help make one's entry into heaven a virtual certainty.
The church and the Pope, have been given the authority to do this by Jesus, himself.
I have an uncle who, as I write this, is certainly in heaven, although not yet officially declared a saint by the church. His name is Walter.
One may become a saint through God's grace, and by faithful, full, voluntary, and continuous participation in the work, worship, and sacraments of God's true church, or through other, largely uncertain means, which God, in his mercy, may also choose to accept.

Steps to Sainthood
In the 10th century, Pope John XV developed an official canonisation procedure, which went through some revisions in the ensuing 1,000 years.
The process must begin five years after the candidate's death.
Local bishops investigate the life of the candidate and the findings are sent to the Vatican.
After approval by a panel of theologians and cardinals, the pope proclaims the candidate is "venerable," meaning a role model of Roman Catholic virtues.
The next step is beatification if it is determined by the church that the candidate is responsible for a miracle after his or her death.
Finally, for the designation of saint, the church must certify proof of a second posthumous miracle.

A regular Saint is just someone who is in Heaven. A Canonized Saint is someone whose life has been researched by the Catholic Church and who has shown themselves to:
*have lived a life worthy of study by other Catholics.
*have gone to Heaven and not Purgatory or Hell.
*have helped other people (Miracles) after death.

You don't "become" a saint. God makes you a saint. A saint is any person who has been drawn to Christ Jesus by God the Father and who has been given new life by the indwelling Holy Spirit of God. Anyone who claims to be a "saint" who doesn't have the indwelling Holy Spirit is in reality an "ain't".
So if you really want to become a Saint then call out to God in the name of Jesus and confess that you are a helpless sinner and ask Him to forgive you and send his Holy Spirit to dwell in your heart. If you do this with sincerity He will give you what you ask for.
Jesus said "And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" Luke 11:9-13

The process of becoming a saint involves beatification and canonization. Usually there must be proof that the individual was responsible for miracles. The Catholic Church canonizes or beatifies only those whose lives have been marked by the exercise of heroic virtue, and only after this has been proved by common repute for sanctity and by conclusive arguments.

Just ask Jesus into your heart. That is how a person truly is a Saint. They don't have to wait till they die. Be holy people means set apart, dedicated for His service.
