Drinking icy cold water does burn some calories, but not enough to have a significant effect on your weight!
Let's do some math (all estimates and answers are approximate!):
1 calorie = the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1 degree. Imagine a 500ml glass of icy cold water at 1°C.
500ml water = 500g.
Temperature water must be raised by: 37°C-1°C=36°C
So, the calories burnt by heating the water are:
500 * 36 = 18,000cal.
18,000 calories sounds like a lot, but actually it is almost insignificant because when people talk about calories in relation to food, they are actually talking about kilocalories (often written as "Calorie" with a capital C).
1 kilocalorie = 1,000 calories. So that 18,000 calories is really just 18kcal.
1 kg of body-fat tissue has roughly the caloric energy of 870 g of pure fat, or 7800 kcal.
So to lose 1kg of fat, you would have to drink about 216 litres of icy cold water. That's around four full bathtubs of icy water!

If you need to hydrate yourself, room temperature is the best because you can drink larger amounts without stopping because the cold is hurting your throat and giving you a head ache. Drinking cold water isn't without it's benefits, though. If you drink cold water, your body burns calories to warm it up to body temperature. If you work outside, cold water is good for bringing you body temperature down.

I dont think it matters because within a short time the water becomes the temperature your body is.

Not really, your stomach likes it room temperature, but they say if you want to lose weight you should drink it cold, then the body needs to work at it to warm it and thus you burn calories.

Healthwise, I've heard room temperature is best. But nothing beats a cold glass on a hot day.

If you're looking to lose weight, theoretically cold water would be the best. Your body would have to warm it up to 98.6 and would burn a very very small amount of calories to do so. But really, doesn't matter.

I have heard that cool/cold water is best because the metobolism kicks in and it actually helps the metobolism to get going. Whether that is true or not, I don't know - it is just what I have been told.

During/after exercise I prefer room temp, because if it too cold it hurt my throat. Rest of the time I keep a gallon in the fridge.
