How have condoms been around for over 100 years? Gosh, I need to quit pondering meaningless thoughts!

Well, no, latex is not a plastic. Latex is natural rubber - sap from a rubber tree.
Also, before condoms were made from latex, they were made from other materials. A popular one was a section of intestine from a lamb that fit just right. These are still available, and very expensive, but the pores in the intestine are large enough to let HIV through. They will help reduce risk of pregnancy, but they are not useful for HIV.

Plastics were invented well before the 60s, but latex is a natural plastic, that comes from the sap of a rubber tree. But condoms have been around for much longer than 100 years ... the early ones were made of sheep's intestines.

1. Latex is not a plastic. It is a type of rubber.
2. Plastic has been around since the 20's. (Look up Bakelite)
3. Condoms have been made of other things (and still are!)

ok condoms were made from ( ewwww) animal intestines, ( toldja it was an ewww) and latex is a type of plastic,and plastic was invented on the 40's, condoms have been around for longer than that. Not all condoms were made of lates. My mom had shown me a package from , get this!, the 50's and they were made from sheep's intestines,and rubber, hence the terms, " rubbers,"

Latex is the sap extracted from rubber trees that is white in color, sticky in composition and flexible in form and use as the basic raw material ingredient in the manufacture of rubber. So latex is not plastic though plastic in finished form may contain certain amount of latex for purposes of pliability and durability.

Latex is a rubber, hence the name. plastics were around before the 60's. They used to be made of lambskin. intestine.
